Film Festival gets new chief

Jaie Laplante, a former co-director of the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and current director of the South Beach Food & Wine Festival, has been hired by Miami Dade College to oversee the 27th edition of the Miami International Film Festival, running March 4-13.

Laplante replaces Tiziana Finzi, whose contract as festival director was not renewed after two years. Laplante has a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts specializing in film production from York University and several listed credits on the Internet Movie Database, including acting, screenwriting and script supervision.

“I like to be at the intersection of artistic and creative impulse, but through a strong business and fiscal approach,” Laplante said in a press release issued Monday. “I am very excited about working for the Miami International Film Festival at Miami Dade College to continue building on the successes the festival has achieved through the backing of the institution and its supporters.”

Laplante officially begins his new gig on Oct. 15.
