Tour the Freedom Tower
The Freedom Tower, a national landmark favored by many locals, opens its doors Saturday, Feb. 20, for a free tour for the first 20 people who RSVP. The Freedom Tower is Miami’s version of Ellis Island because it is where Cuban exiles from 1960 to 1972 were processed and documented, and where they first received dental and medical care. The beautiful 1925 building in downtown, with its Mediterranean Revival design, was originally built as the headquarters for The Miami News, which occupied it until 1957. It is now the home of Miami Dade College’s Museum of Art and Design, where visitors can see the current exhibition on the second floor.
