They evacuated after Hurricane Maria and brought their Puerto Rican restaurant to Miami

After hurricane Maria destroyed the owners’ home in the Condado suburb east of Old San Juan, they moved to Miami last November and opened La Social.

Enjoy a dragon fruit smoothie or vegan brownie here, where La Social offers dishes for conscious eaters. Think organic soups, hefty salads and sandwiches on artisanal breads, served with quinoa chips and house-made pineapple sriracha.

Chef Ivan Nieves flies to Puerto Rico every two weeks to check on the original La Social that survived the storm. Spouse and partner David Flores keeps the Miami outpost humming. The two bake, specializing in layer cakes. There’s a patio in back with a communal table under a gigantic ficus tree and the interior has a compact open kitchen behind the counter where you can watch your meal be cooked.

Fruit and chicken salad at La Social

Kick start a day with an espresso and coconut cream French toast. The Spanish omelet with prosciutto, Manchego cheese and onion with a side of ciabatta bread is even hearties.

For lunch or an early dinner, order a toast board with a choice of two open-face slices of toast with avocado, soft goat cheese and smoked salmon. Other options include baby bella mushrooms with spinach and extra virgin olive oil or honey grilled peaches with goat cheese and parsley.

Or go with the spinach quesadilla with caramelized onions and goat cheese. There’s also basil tomato soup and creamy carrot coconut ginger soup.

At the counter, check the daily specials displayed in bowls and pans. There’s usually at least one island-inspired dish like Caribbean red beans and rice cooked in sofrito and tomato sauce. They’re tossed with sweet plantain cubes,  roasted red peppers and a vegan casserole of sweet potato, broccoli, carrots, and mushrooms.

There’s usually a pasta with apple-chicken sausage, served hot with melting mozzarella as well as a pasta salad with feta, olives and tomatoes.

From the regular menu, try the berry salad on spinach greens, topped with blueberries, strawberries, sliced almonds, pineapple and goat cheese iwth warm roasted shredded chicken.

Sandwiches include a mushroom melt on toasted whole grain, oozing mozzarella and caramelized onions. The Tri-Level Social Club comes on brioche with smoked ham, turkey, bacon, mozzarella, Swiss and cheddar with avocado and a fried egg.

The Champagne cake is a two-layer white cake with pink Champagne added to the batter, creating little air holes when baked. It’s slathered in buttercream frosting and sprinkled in sparkling sugar. Dessert options change daily, including vegan treats such as their carrot cake.
