Middle Eastern specialties at Sunrise Pita & Grill

Falafel fans, here’s a spot for you. The golden brown chickpea fritters star at Sunrise Pita & Grill, which has been serving fast, fresh and authentic Israeli street fare since 1988.

Owner Avi Sharabi offers a varied menu of inexpensive glatt kosher Middle Eastern specialties in this small, unassuming storefront on U.S. 1 — you can easily feast for under $10; the most expensive item is a steak platter for $16.99.

Everything is made on the premises except for the bread and baklava. Delicious handmade falafels, fried to order, come on a platter, as a solo snack or in a sandwich on either pita, lafa (a large thin pita wrap without the pocket) or baguette. Then you can add any number of salads and sauces — roasted eggplant, pickled cabbage, tomato and cucumber, hummus, tahini (sesame seed paste) or schug (a Yemenite hot sauce).

Entrees include All in One Mini Plates, which offer a huge amount of food, the Health Corner or Hummus Meat Specials. Our hummus steak plate brings a mound of lean, juicy beef smothered in garlicky hummus — too much of a good thing. Next time, we’d get the steak with hummus on the side.

Among starters, try the Moroccan cigars, crisp tubes filled with soy meat, stuffed grape leaves or baba ghanoush, the lush eggplant spread. And for dessert, bring your bubbeh some sweet baklava.
