Miami was just named one of America’s top food cities. Who’s better than us?

We know Miami is one of America’s best food cities – but did you know it was the no. 3 food city in the country?

Yes. We’re no. 3! At least according to WalletHub’s latest survey. Normally, we are extremely sensitive and would complain about not being no. 1. But we are mature now and generous enough to know that other cities have great food, too, even if they don’t know what a croqueta is.

We fall behind Portland, Oregon (no. 1) and San Francisco (no. 2). The rest of the top 10 list: New York, Los Angeles, Orlando, Las Vegas, Seattle, San Diego and Austin, Texas.

Truly, though, we should not be surprised to learn Miami is a no. 3 city. People are crazy about food here. The 2018 South Beach Wine & Food Festival is probably already sold out. We have one of the top 50 restaurants in the country, according to Bon Appetit. Joe’s Stone Crab was no. 2 on Food and Wine magazine’s list of the 40 most important restaurants of the last 40 years. We make delicious desserts out of mushrooms, for God’s sake.

Bon Appetit named Palmar Chinese restaurant in Wynwood one of the top 50 restaurants in the country.

How did WalletHub arrive at this conclusion? It compared 180 U.S. cities across 29 indicators of foodie-friendliness, from the cost of groceries to affordability and accessibility of high-quality restaurants to food festivals per capita.

Miami, not surprisingly, scored high in the “diversity, accessibility and quality” ranking (no. 3). Costwise, it didn’t do so well, coming in at no. 100. Also, it had the second-most gourmet specialty food stores per capita, second only to New York.

Miami also ranked in the top five cities with the most ice cream and frozen yogurt shops. Hey, we have people making gourmet versions of your childhood ice cream favorites. We’d expect nothing less.
