Celebrities, chefs and musicians are hosting a festival to raise money for Parkland victims. Here’s how to attend

Actions for Change

A stellar lineup of world renowned chefs, celebrities and musicians are coming together this weekend to honor the victims of the Parkland shooting.

The inaugural Actions For Change Food and Music Festival on Sept. 30 will raise money for two organizations borne of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February, Shine MSD and Change The Ref.

Hosted by actress activist Alyssa Milano, the event features more than 30 James Beard winning and Michelin Star rated chefs from around the country: Marc Vetri, Art Smith, Suzanne Goin, Victor Planas, Kimberly Lallouz, Bart Messing, Jessica HernandezMichael Hackman, Michelle Bernstein and Brad Kilgore of the Miami restaurants Alter and Brava at the Arsht Center.

The event also features a musical line up that includes Michael Franti & Spearhead, Nahko, Carrie Manolakos, Skip Marley and Friends of Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary Fame. DJ Samantha Ronson will  spin. The event will also feature the debut of “Wake Up America,” an album written by MSD students raising awareness about gun safety, spearheaded by the aforementioned Yarrow, still very much an activist.

“We can never take back the events of that day, but our hope is that by mobilizing the next generation, no other community will experience what we have gone through,” said Doug Zeif, event organizer and parent of Parkland survivors Sam and Matthew. “This Action for Change Event is just our way of creating purpose out of pain.”

Proceeds benefit Shine MSD, a nonprofit formed to provide healing through the arts for victims of gun violence. All of the funds will be used to continue Camp Shine, a free summer camp that provides mental health programs centered around the arts at MSD High School in Parkland.

Funds also benefit Change The Ref, founded by Manuel and Patricia Oliver in the memory of their son, Parkland victim Joaquin, and formed to empower future leaders, giving them the tools to make changes to critical issues affecting our nation.
