This political front runner’s career was destroyed in Miami. Now there’s a movie about him

Interesting casting: Hugh Jackman as Gary Hart.

Interesting timing, in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

Pictures on the Daily Mail show the Aussie actor in character shooting “The Front Runner” in Atlanta.

The movie, directed by Jason Reitman, follows the dramatic rise and fall of the political front runner who was taken down in (naturally) Miami.

While running for president in 1987, the married Democrat taunted reporters to follow him as he had nothing to hide.

Turns out he did have something to hide — a certain lady friend named Donna Rice.

The Miami Herald broke the story after an anonymous source (who later turned out to be a Broward designer named Dana Weems), tipped off  reporter Tom Fiedler that Hart had been seen partying it up with Rice on a yacht called the Monkey Business, anchored at Turnberry Isle. The picture of her on his lap is a classic.

The National Enquirer blew it up on its their June 2, 1987 cover with the headline, ‘GARY HART ASKED ME TO MARRY HIM.’

Hart soon withdrew from the race (but is still married). Rice, who is being played by Twin Peaks star Sara Paxton, is now an Internet safety advocate.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the screenplay was written by political journalist Matt Bai, former Hillary Clinton press secretary Jay Carson (House of Cards) and based on Bai’s 2014 book All the Truth Is Out.
