WMC Under the Radar

It’s easy to look at the Winter Music Conference schedule and pinpoint superstar DJs and megaclubs as the acts to see and places to be during its 10 days of musical madness in Miami. But if you’d rather target a few low-key events that could turn out to be even cooler, check out our list of events that might slip past the masses, but will have you raving about them afterward.

Friday, March 16: BATIDA!
What better way to jump-start your WMC experience than with the best in sensual Brazilian rhythms, highlighted by Marcello Bentine and the Brazilian Soul Crew? And the superbly innovative fusion cuisine and exotic drinks don’t hurt, either; 8 p.m.-2 a.m. at SushiSamba, 600 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach; 305-301-6415; free.

Friday, March 16: JUNIOR BOYS LIVE!
Canadian indie-electronic duo churns out spooky, melodic pop-dance tracks – their song “Birthday” was featured on Sander Kleinenberg’s excellent compilation mix CD “This Is Everybody Too”; 10 p.m. at Chalk Ping Pong & Billiards Lounge, 1234 Washington Ave., Miami Beach; www.wantickets.com; $20.

Saturday, March 17: DIRTY RETRO LOVE HOUSE PARTY
An international lineup of DJs, including Dirty Retro and The Insomniacts brings the old-school to the house; 9 p.m.-5 a.m. at Love Hate, 423 Washington Ave., Miami Beach; 786-553-3148; $10, free with WMC badge.

Sunday, March 18: A DAY IN K.A.O.S.
You can’t beat a 15-hour event with dozens of house, breaks and downtempo DJs, plus a killer view; noon-3 a.m. at Finnegan’s on the River, 401 SW 3rd Ave., Miami; www.wantickets.com; $25, free with WMC badge.

Monday, March 19: WEEKNDANCE PART IV
This is the best time to enjoy the sexy ambiance at Nikki Beach without the massive, impenetrable crowds that will flock to see superstar DJs later in the week. Shake it in the sand to the international beats of 16 talented but relatively unknown DJs, plus four live acts; noon-10 p.m. at Nikki Beach, 1 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach; 786-285-5976; $20.

Wednesday, March 21: LLUSIVE ALL-STARS
This might well be the bargain of the entire WMC experience, with British progressive house DJs Danny Howells (check out his amazing 2005 compilation CD “Global Underground: Miami”), Desyn Masiello and Demi, plus Welsh trance and breaks group Hybrid performing for free to support breast cancer; 6 p.m.-2 a.m. at the Delano
Hotel, 1685 Collins Ave., Miami Beach; 305-672-2000.

Thursday, March 22: DUTCHIE MUSIC WMC SHOWCASE
Florida DJ Chris Fortier, whose remix of Delerium’s anthem “Silence” blew up in 1998, spins dark progressive house alongside Juan Mejia; 8 p.m.- 4 a.m. at Foxhole, 1426-A 14th Ct., Miami Beach; www.foxholebar.com; free.

Friday, March 23: SALTED MUSIC WMC

Saturday, March 24: RX POOL PARTY
Groove to the sounds of Dirty Vegas’ Paul Harris, plus up-and-coming DJ Justin Sheppard and many more; 11 a.m.-8 p.m. at The Rooftop Pool at the Perry Hotel (formerly the Gansevoort), 2377 Collins Ave., Miami Beach; 305-965-1467; free.

Sunday, March 25: CYBER SLAM, VOL. 2
The label and radio station Cyber Jamz features six hours of deep and soulful underground house music by DJ Peace Soul, Young Starr and many more; 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at Hotel Shelley, 844 Collins Ave., Miami Beach; www.hotelshelley.com; $10.
