What's hot in sunglasses for fall?
We talked to an expert
Sunglasses are such a huge part of South Floridian life, we wanted to get the 411 on what's hot and what's not. Since the stars often set the trends we chatted with Eden Wexler, Celebrity Shades Consultant (yes!) for SOLSTICE Sunglasses, with locations on Lincoln Road and Aventura Mall.
What are the "It" designer styles right now?
Celine is one of the hottest new brands we’re carrying at Solstice. Gucci, Dior and Carrera are always top sellers in the Miami market. The cat eye shape for women is probably the biggest “it” sunglass shape. Vintage inspired silhouettes – rounds, aviators and wayfarer shapes – are all hot for men.
How many shades should we own in general in a sunny climate?
If your budget can allow it, it’s great to have at least one casual/sporty pair (polarized lenses are great), one dressier/fashion pair and one fun pair (in a bright color or uber trendy styling).
Anything in a jewel tone: red, burgundy, plum, violet, blue and emerald green. In sunny locations like Miami, blush tones are also very hot.
What styles will we be seeing this fall-winter?
Mid and oversized rounded silhouettes for men and women are trending right now. They have a vintage/quirky feel to them. Gucci had a great pair in their Fall/Winter 2012-13 which are in stores now. Cat eye shapes continue to persevere. This trend has been around for three years now and continues to emerge and evolve in the months ahead. Various nuances in shape, textures and colors continue to make this silhouette seem fresh and new.
Most of our brands offer exciting new cat eye silhouettes. Color (all-over treatment and in accents and details) remains important. In particular, translucent, see-through colors seem to really be trending and run the gamut from crystal clear to gemstone brights. Texture has become very important for sunglasses on both the front of the frames. Frame fronts and/or sides are now featuring interesting tactile finishes that offers a unique and/or luxe feel. Dior is offering a unique series of styles that provides a tweed textured look without the glasses actually being made of tweed. As we get closer to the holidays, special luxe materials, embellishments and jewelry-like accents become more important - be it crystal detailing (Jimmy Choo , Gucci and Marc Jacobs offer some beautiful choices), studded details (Alexander McQueen), jewelry-like chain detailing on temples (Gucci), pearls (Marc Jacobs) and leather touches ranging from over the nose piece e(Carrera) to the temples (Bottega Veneta).
Is everything old new again?
Mirrored lenses are also starting to make a comeback. We have a couple great new options in our Carrera and Marc by Marc Jacobs collections. Various brands (Hugo Boss, Juicy Couture, Carrera) are offering super convenient foldable glasses that fit easily in small handbags or suit jackets.
Bug eyes: yay or nay?
Frames seem to be all over the place in terms of sizing but larger frames are definitely becoming fashionably en vogue again which is great in a place like Miami were full coverage in the eye area is very important.
What celebs have you seen wearing what?
Bruce Willis and Colin Farell were recently seen in Dior Homme smaller square rectangular shape sunglasses. Dior cat eyes were seen on Krysten Ritter, Nikki Reed, and Natalie Portman out and about in L.A. recently. Charlize Theron was spotted in Marc by Marc Jacobs. Emily Blunt was seen wearing Kate Spade sunglasses in L.A. Jennifer Lopez has been spotted in the Gucci Floras as well as Roberto Cavallis (pictured). We’ve seen Dominic Cooper, Adrien Grenier, model Erin Heatherton, model Chrissy Teigen all in NYC wearing the new Carrera 6000s.
How do celebs use sunglasses to their advantage?
Sunglasses are celebrities’ most important accessory. Whether topping off an uber- stylish outfit or create a certain level of mystery, celebrities always need sunglasses to protect themselves from the blinding lights of fame!
