Well, what can I say about Wednesday? It started off bad, considering I never got in to Tommy Lee and DJ Aero's pool party at the Gansevoort Hotel, despite repeated assurances from their handler that I was on the list. Tsk tsk... I guess it shouldn't surprise me, given their little stunt at the Club World Awards (more on that event later on).
The Club World Awards were even more impressive this year than the last. A lot more people showed up, cameras were flashing left and right, and the venue, Set, is incredibly luxurious and the perfect place to hold the awards. It's like the Club World Awards are an actual awards ceremony (btw, Fred, the winners will be up shortly. Not trying to make you look foolish here :)
Also, our friend Tommy Lee was right behind me. I tried to get in a world with him, but it took his bodyguard about 0.5 seconds to stop me in my tracks. I swear, to quote Joe Pesci, that guy's harder to reach than the President.
After the club world awards, the real fun started. organicArma, a local minimalist techno/psy trio, opened the night at Chakra, an Indian-style lounge. Very trippy stuff, very dark, but very concise and musically pure. And they play live instruments instead of just spinning, and that in itself was just incredible. The next act, Motor, was pure psychedelic trance, and though the crowd was small for a WMC event, they were grooving to the beat, even the staff.
Of course, that was just the buildup for the main act, Infected Mushroom, a band that needs no introduction. Once they got going...well, it was out of control. Awesome finish for a good night.
More to come later, including more Q&As, and of course, the long-awaited Ultra review. Stay tuned!
