Velvet Underground: Summertime happy hour at Wynwood Kitchen & Bar, South Beach's Mr. Melvin Show welcomes Jon Secada, Fiesta Friday at Duffy's, Privileged Sundays return to the Delano, and the National Hotel launches party with vintage cocktails
Discounted cocktails and snacks at WKB, salsa and merengue in North Miami Beach, the National Hotel celebrates a major makeover, and the rich revel at the Delano
Summer means a lot of things, some more pleasant than others. Among them, a new happy hour from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Wynwood Kitchen & Bar, 2550 NW 2nd Ave., Miami. Not only is it cool there, literally and figuratively, but you'll save money with 30 percent off draft beers and mixed drinks and $2 snacks including ropa vieja, empanadas and Devilish eggs, among others. When it's hot, you're supposed to sweat it out to cool down, so check out one of the new cocktails like the sizzling Peppery Pepino, a fiery fusion of Zignum reposado mezcal, The King's Ginger liqueur, red pepper, cayenne pepper, fresh lime and cucumber.
Vaudeville and The Muppet Show may be relics, but variety shows are back as seen with the recent premiere of the Maya Rudolph Show and Miami Beach's Mr. Melvin Show. The latter promises sketch comedy, musical insanity and laughs on Fridays at Arena Restaurant Lounge, 653 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. Doors open at 8 p.m. for dinner, cocktails and this week's show featuring special guest and legit bold facer Jon Secada at 10 p.m. All that's missing is Carol Burnett and friends, but who knows -- they may show up, too. Tickets are $25 at mrmelvin.eventbrite.com.
As if Fridays weren't festive enough, now Duffy's Sports Grill (3969 NE 163rd St., North Miami Beach) is celebrating Fiesta Friday from 6 to 11 p.m. with DJ Bateeza spinning salsa and merengue. For those who want their livers to do a dance of sorts, there are two-for-one Patron margaritas.
Life's a Beach
Relaunching from 2 p.m. to sundown on Sunday, June 1 is the Delano Beach Club's dubiously, douchetastically-titled Privileged Sundays party (1685 Collins Ave., Miami Beach). In addition to the bodies beautiful, there will be entertainers, dancers, body paint models, and contortionists. Professional ones, that is. Rotating DJs include Ben DJ, Arlette Carlin and Dave Sol. Here's the kicker: there are packages available for the extra privileged. A mere $1,000 for six people to share a daybed, bottle of Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque or Grey Goose, a frozen fruit platter and a discounted (!) Bianca brunch for $60 (!) a person or $2,000 for ten people to share a cabana, two frozen fruit platters, a bottle of the aforementioned, the same discounted (!) brunch at $60 (!) per person and, ready for this...? A Grey Goose Fresh Press Fountain. For those less, er, privileged, there's always the cash bar that's open to the public.
A Very Good Year
When it comes to cocktails, old is definitely new -- especially when the vintage cocktails -- a Floral Flute (Prosecco), National Hemingway (white rum), Tamara Bella (tequila) and Cucumber Fresco (gin) -- come with a vintage price tag (well, circa whatever year drinks cost $6 - $8 on South Beach) from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 4 and every other Wednesday until August 27 at the Blues Bar at the fresh-faced National Hotel, 1677 Collins Ave., Miami Beach. During the cocktail hour, you'll hear jazz and blues music, but you won't be singing the blues when you stuff your thoroughly modern faces with complimentary appetizers.
Waka Waka Waka
Speaking of The Muppet Show, Waka Flocka Flame is not only a tongue twister but clearly a sample (the PC word for ripoff) of Fozzie Bear's kitschy catchphrase. That being said, the Atlanta rapper has made a name and a sound for himself that MIami can experience firsthand at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 5 when his U.S. tour stops at Grand Central, 697 N. Miami Ave. Tickets to the all ages affair are available at dopeent.com for $20.
