Velvet Underground: Macchialina presents bartender Robert Ferrara in this month's bar takeover, Jazid on South Beach turns 18, and The Federal Food, Drink & Provisions hosts Solo Cup Sundays
Jersey boy Robert Ferrara mixes cocktails for one night only at Macchialina, Jazid throws its 18th birthday party, and The Federal goes campy this summer with solo cups
Bar for the Course
Whether you call them bartenders or mixologists (we prefer the former), professional and recreational imbibers alike all benefit from the skills of a masterful bartologist. How's that for a new moniker? Semantics aside, Macchialina, 820 Alton Rd., is throwing its second Bar Takeover from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday, June 19 when lead 'tender Will Rivas steps aside for guest bartender Rob Ferrara of Lure Fishbar. There's even a kitschy theme inspired by Ferrara's old stomping grounds--"A Night at the Jersey Shore" with Italian ice cocktails, sausage and peppers and inevitable references to the pop cultural blemish made by MTV.
18 and Counting
Happy 18th birthday to Jazid, 1342 Washington Ave., Miami Beach's most senior of nightclubs, which celebrates its legal voting age with weekend-long festivities beginning Friday, June 13 and continuing through the 14th with performances by Jahfe and Miami on Beat. "Jazid is, by far, the oldest club in South Beach and the only representation of live music in the area of Miami Beach," says owner Daniel Wohlstein. "It makes me very proud to be the owner." The club opens at 10 p.m. both nights and admission is free until 11 p.m. After that, it's $10. For more information, go to jazid.net.
So Brisk Iced Tea is also getting into the Miami nightlife biz, if for one night only, via Brisk Bodega Miami, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, June 13, at Grand Central, 697 N. Miami Ave., where the iced tea be available straight up and with booze. Headlining the event will be LA-based Roc Nation artist, DJ Mustard and special guests. There will also be light snacks, beer and wine. Event is open to the public with an RSVP at briskbodega.com/MIA.
You Better Think
The word art is the bacon of events. Put it into an event description and suddenly it all tastes better. Case and point: Think Hotel Group's Courtyard Art & Cinema Friday Night Series starting this Friday at 7 p.m. at South Beach Hotel, 236 21st St. There, you'll get to check out local--wait for it--art from more than 40 different international artists, short films such as Friday the 13th's Searching for Sugar Man by the recently deceased Academy Award winning documentarian Malik Bendjelloul. Orange Blossom will offer food and drink for purchase but the actual art and film stuff is free to look at. On second thought, free may be the bacon of events.
Let's Have a Party!
Sunday summer nights turn campy with The Federal Food, Drink & Provisions' (5132 Biscayne Blvd.) new Solo Cup Sundays, starting at 6 p.m. with spiked punch bowls, barbecue and the playlists of Fed players Cesar Zapata, Aniece Meinhold or even an outside chef, bartender or industry professional. For $20 per person, a self-serve bar will feature three "large vat punch dispensers" with handcrafted concoctions created by "The Federal's Booze Fairy Emily Brown," as well as a trough stocked with PBR, sodas, bottled water and Solo cups. Lots of them. Red, of course. 305-758-9559.
Artfulness (next week)
Even though the event has the requisite hashtag/ubiquitous catchphrase 'pop-up' in its name, the River of Art Pop Up Social from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 17 at Batch Gastropub, 30 SW 12th St., has excellent intentions, "bringing people and art together," and connecting to charities, no less. A $20 ticket gets you a welcome drink and food. Artists include Terry Arroyo Mulrooney, Valeria Actis and Mitchell Shulman; charities are Dream Defenders and Conscious Acts of Kindness. To RSVP, go to lifeisartfest.org.
