Velvet Underground: Vinyl fever returns on Record Store Day, LA-based dark glam opera band 'Timur and the Dime Museum' plays for The Miami Light Project, and go retro with famed drag queen Elaine Lancaster at Miami Bingo Bash
Celebrate high fidelity at Grand Central on Record Store Day, sing like an indie rocker at The Miami Light Project's annual fundraiser, and play bingo for Botox (and charity)
Record stores may have gone the way of the blacksmith shop, but for those who used to spend countless hours sifting through sleeves, vinyl and bins, and those who wonder what it was like and can't quite recreate the experience in Colonial Williamsburg, "Record Store Day" is their chance to pay homage to the old days of stereophonic sound. To honor Miami's own history pressed in wax, which has nothing to do with some of the ladies who lunch at Bal Harbour, Grand Central, 697 N. Miami Ave., is recognizing the city's old mom and pop shops and chains as well as some of the acts that emerged during that era -- Nuclear Valdez, Charlie Pickett, Jim Camacho and more (who will perform) -- to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson's disease and research. It's a call-to-action inspired by the diagnosis of former Peaches exec Alan Jackowitz. In addition to tunes, there will be a musical photography digital expo, a record swap meet and more. Doors open for VIP admission at 5 p.m. and general admission runs from 6 - 11 p.m. on Saturday, April 19. Tickets are $10 or $20 for VIP access to the record collector fair.
Leave it to Miami Light Project to bring LA-based post-punk glam band Timur and the Dime Museum to Miami as headliners for its annual fundraiser at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 19 at The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse, 404 NW 26th St., in Wynwood. The band's lead singer is known as a "fascinating Kazakh-American hybrid, a flamboyant performer with a beautifully haunting voice and a brilliant architect of tension," according to LA Weekly. Some lucky attendees will get to sing along with the band in what is being billed as the Timur and Dime Museum Karaoke Spectacular. In addition to karaoke, there will be cocktails and Shorty's BBQ. Tickets are $100 and benefit several Miami Light Project programs. When you buy them, you get to choose from a list of songs, and Timur will select five to six people the night of the show to perform.
Bingo for Botox
About those aforementioned ladies who lunch: they may want to check out Grand Central on Thursday, April 24, when, from 7:30 to 11 p.m., drag diva extraordinaire Elaine Lancaster will host a boozy night of retro-fab bingo with ultra-modern prizes. Among them, "non-invasive cosmetic procedures from celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Salzhauer," teeth whitening, a year of free Botox, yacht rentals, flat screen TVs, hotel getaways at The Gale, and more. Plus, free drinks by Lucas Bols and Damrak Gin all night long. The event benefits Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida. Tickets range from $65 to $140 and are very limited.
Walk this Way
The MTV Staying Alive Foundation is celebrating AIDS Walk Miami's 26th anniversary with a big bash from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday, April 24 at HaVen Gastro-Lounge, 1237 Lincoln Rd. Headlining the party is singer/songwriter Periko & Jessi León with music by local talent Basside and DJ Mauricio Parra, along with a swimwear fashion show. Those who contribute a donation of $20 will get one free drink and a raffle entry. Those who choose not to contribute will just be deemed as freeloaders. MTV has supported numerous AIDS Walks across the country, and has raised more than $450,000 since 2005 for the Miami’s AIDS Walk. T-shirts will be provided if you join the MTV Team for the walk on Sunday, April 27 with a minimum donation of $25. RSVP required.
