Velvet Underground: African music and culture takes the stage at the Afro Roots World Music Festival and The Broken Shaker invites you to party poolside this Sunday
Touché launches prix fixe menu and DJ Clockwork plays Mansion
Young, LA-based DJ slash producer Clockwork isn't so ironically named because when it comes to DJs, it seems that his time is now. Hailed for his big bass by big names such as Tiesto and Steve Aioki, Clockwork will be right on time (ish) when he plays at Mansion, 1235 Washington Ave. Friday, Aug. 8 for the first time. Doors open at 11 p.m. and tickets are $30 at wantickets.com. We have a feeling that may be the first and last time tickets will be that cheap to hear him.
Touching up the Roots
Some folks have to get their roots done on a monthly basis. Others prefer the ombre look whether it's in or out. And then there's the Afro Roots World Music Festival, an annual aural affair celebrating African music and culture, taking place at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at 7th Circuit Productions, 228 NE 59th St., Miami. There, you'll find an impressive lineup of local, regional and international acts including So Flo's own DJ Le Spam, Miami Street Band, Suenalo and The Resolvers, as well as Senegal's Morikeba Kouyate, Cuba's Tomas Diaz, and Colombia's EPHNIKO. “We feel the event has been getting better each year, and this lineup is surely a testament to that. We're looking forward to celebrating the widespread influence that Africa has on music and continuing the mission of Community Arts and Culture, which is to foster an appreciation of the arts and culture through education," said executive director Jose Elias. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the show.
Sassy chef Carla Pellegrino has a lofty Thursday night party at her Touché Rooftop Lounge & Restaurant, 15 NE 11th St., Miami, where, from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. you can munch on prix fixe small plates, a specially priced cocktail menu and tunes by resident DJ Wasabi. The menu is $16 per person and includes two dishes---among them, sushi rolls and wood fired pizzas and dessert such as strawberries in ganache, mango mousse tart or chocolate mousse fondant tart. As for the party's name--Beehive Thursdays, we asked what that was all about and, well, nothing much. It's just a name. The rest is up to you.
It's that time of the month, when people tend to get a little batty, a little off and a little ornery--a moonstrual cycle, so to speak. And instead of resisting the pull, just go with it from 7 p.m. to midnight Sunday, Aug. 10 at the Delano Beach Club, 1685 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, for what they're billing as the Super Moon Soiree. Among the "surprises and special performances," expect fire dancers and music by Pirate Stereo along with Unomas. For cabana reservations, email DBCVIP@LightMia.com.
The Broken Shaker at the Freehand, 2727 Indian Creek Dr., Miami Beach, is known for its savvy nighttime boozing, but from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10 you won't need an excuse to day drink as the Rise 'n' Shine Patio & Poolside Barbecue with Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum raises funds for the Louis Salgar Foundation, supporting the family of the recently slain Gramps/Broken Shaker bartender. Specials include the Jerry Mary, punchbowls, Rum and Coke braised collard greens and a whole lot more. There will also be live Sailor Jerry tattooing by Las Olas Tattoo Co., just in case you want to take home a more permanent souvenir than a hangover.
