Honey Boo Who?
When South Beach's venerable drag personality Shelley Novak started her infamous awards show 20 years ago, Mama June, Honey Boo Boo's mother, was barely a teenager. When asked how it feels to reach this major milestone, Novak said, "When your show becomes older than your boyfriend, that's an accomplishment. The last time that happened was Richard Chamberlain and Dr. Kildare. But seriously, of all my laziness and self-doubt, I'm shocked and satisfied and thrilled it has run 20 years. I think it may be the only evening that brings together every walk of life on South Beach--gay, straight, drag, butch--everybody.” The Shelley Novak awards are at 9 p.m. Monday, March 11 at Score, 727 Lincoln Rd.
A Heady Its Time
From the producers of Grovetoberfest comes Sprung, "a true spring and summer craft beer festival like no other," according to a press release. Pouring from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at Peacock Park, 2820 McFarlane Road in Coconut Grove, Sprung will feature over 150 spring and summer craft beers from breweries including Sierra Nevada, Brooklyn Brewery, Shnebly, Cigar City, Wynwood Brewing, Blue Moon, Shiner and more. Of course, no beer fest is complete without beer pong, corn hole and human bowling complete with large plastic balls bigger than those found on some local politicians. Hip hop ensemble ArtOfficial will perform and food by local restaurants including the not yet opened Batch Gastro, the first ever gastropub within a Hampton Inn (on Brickell) will feed. Tickets range from $39 to $9 and are available at www.IGotSprung.com or by calling 305-461-2700.
Little Lighthouse, Big Gala
It's not every day one gets to party at a home better known as a "waterfront compound," but from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, March 9, The Little Lighthouse Foundation is throwing its fourth annual Hearts and Stars Gala at Terra Veritatis, 4949 Pinetree Dr. on Miami Beach, which will be transformed into the swanky Casino de Monte-Carlo, complete with a, forgive us, pop-up of SoFra (that's South of France) haute spot (and former Miami one too) Jimmy'z, affable host Buster Cox, DJ Rony Seikaly, champagne on yachts parked there and food from Lyon and Lyon, Alba Seaside Restaurant, Rosa Mexicano and more. All proceeds will be donated to the foundation, which helps children with educational, financial and medical hardships. For ticket information go to www.heartsandstarsgala.com.
Re-Opening The Vault
Although it was briefly opened as The Bank, The Vault, though similar in concept due to its location within the historic Dade Commonwealth building at 139 NE 1st St., promises an entirely new deposit into the downtown nightlife scene starting with Thursday's Art of Seduction party. The burlesquey night promises to be a new one, at least according to creator/partner Nick Betancourt, who says "We want to bring back the sexy side of burlesque but always leaving something to the imagination. It is time for something different in Miami and this is it!” Not so different but always welcome are the free drinks from 10 p.m. until 11 p.m. and no cover charge until midnight. For reservations call 786-250-7735.
For those who prefer animals to humans, suck it up and head over to the people only "Yappy Hour" from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 at Zen Sai at the Essex House, 1001 Collins Ave. A $20 donation at the door includes two cocktails and passed hors d'oeuvres. All proceeds will go to PetNet, the Humane Society of Greater Miami's young professional group and Young Professionals at Lighthouse for the Blind.
Shoring Up Sundays
If it's Sunday it must be a pool party, but when it comes to the Shore Club (1901 Collins Ave.), it's not just any party. Resurrecting its 2009 splashfest, the Shore Club will feature DJ Irie, DJ Mateo DiFontaine and DJ Gunnars spinning until the sun goes down. For those who eat in bathing suits, there's a "libation unlimited" Ladies Who Brunch/ Party starts at 1 p.m. and ends when the last person is offensively pruned. Brunch goes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For reservations call 305-695-3226.
