Upper Deck: Miami's Posh Pool Parties

By Aurora Rodríguez

While most northerner's are getting ready to snuggle into their fleece pullovers, South Florida's socialites are still celebrating the Miami heat by slipping into their Havaianas and teeny bikinis before heading to some of the fanciest poolside parties the city has to offer. Just make sure to pack that button-down Ted Baker shirt or maxi-dress next to your sunscreen, because at many the fun continues way after the sun goes down.

The pool party: The Shore Club's Shore Thing Sundays
The dress code: Boutique chic

At this event, The Shore Club becomes the playground right out of your wildest South Beach fantasies. Just don't forget your wallet and to get your name on that VIP list. Hosted by famed South Beach promoters Alan Roth and Tommy Pooch, expect to see an array of hard bodies and beautiful supermodel types protecting their peepers behind Chanel shades while sashaying amongst the outdoor venue to the poolside beats of DJ Luis Dee. While most pool parties stay in or right next to the water, this event offers the option of four venues in which to hang out. Sandbar for the beach bums seeking a sandy escape, Rumbar for the rum lover (there are 75 offerings) and Red Room and adjacent Red Room Gardens, which keep the party going with the sounds of DJ Irie. Getting the afternoon munchies? Grab a roll at Nobu or an Italian treat at Ago. Seeking the VIP treatment? Lounge with friends on a poolside cabana offering bottle service.

The Shore Club Shore Thing Sundays, 1901 Collins Ave, Miami Beach; 305-695-3100. From 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. every Sunday, call 786-276-6672 for table reservations.

The pool party: Thursdays @ Plunge in the Gansevoort South
The dress code: Strikingly sexy

The hosts at the Gansevoort Hotel's sophisticated Plunge rooftop bar know Miami's jet-set pack like to start their weekend early, which is why they urge posh scenesters to dare to live the "high life" at their weekly Thursday night rooftop pool party. Thursdays @ Plunge was created by notorious South Florida party promoter Michael Capponi, so expect to spot the beautiful local and out-of-towners sipping strawberry-champagne mojitos atop plush white cabanas. Hungry? Make sure to order from the Plunge's lengthy sushi list. And, while most atendees prefer to stay dry while drinking the event's signature cocktails next to the venue's 118-foot-long pool, some spontaneous jet setters have been known to take an unexpected dive. Celebrity sightings have included the likes of "The Hills" blonde beauty Lauren Conrad and tabloid-fixture Kevin Federline, so don't be surprised if you find yourself enjoying the ocean view with some (kind of) famous faces.

Thursdays @ The Gansevoort South, 2377 Collins Ave, Miami Beach; 305-604-1000. From 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. every Thursday

The pool party: Re-Coup Sundays @ Acqualina
The dress code: Laid-back tropical cool

Re-Coup Sundays @ Acqualina is meant for the relaxed social butterfly and joined-at-the-hip couples looking start their workweek in the right state of mind. Located poolside at the architecturally striking Acqualina Resort & Spa in northern seaside gem Sunny Isles Beach, the event is the perfect excuse to break out your retro swimsuit and vintage flip-flop heels. Lounge in one of the plush cabanas or sip sparkling Nuvo cocktails and dine in one of the dining table's striking bright red seats. Those looking to dance or swim the night away need to look elsewhere, for this event offers a reasonable start time of 4 p.m. until the last relaxing beats are played by DJ Self Barn and performer Jon Saax around 10 p.m.

Re-Coup Sundays @ Acqualina, 17875 Collins Avenue, Sunny Isles Beach; 30- 918-8000. From 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. every Sunday, e-mail floyddrama@aol.com or rongibbs1@mac.com for table and cabana reservations

The pool party: Newport Nights at the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort
The dress code: Guayaberas, disco platforms, flower hairpins

The good times start Sundays, when attendees can groove to their favorite 70s and 80s hits at the "Disco at Dusk" poolside party. Mondays are a samba lover's delight, as Carnival Night introduces newbies to the joy of Brazil with a selection of cachaca cocktails, tastes of the country and music to keep 'em shaking. On Tropical Tuesday, it's all about the Caribbean with a taste of island sounds, food and music. Smoking a cigar and donning a guayabera more your thing? Then don't miss Thursday Havana Nights, which features fast-paced Latin music and ethnic food with drink specials to wash it down. And if happy hour's on your mind, head over with your sweetie to catch the breeze at their Sunset Beach Party on Fridays. By the end of the week, your split personalities will be more than pleased.

Newpost Beachside Hotel, 16701 Collins Ave, Sunny Isles Beach; 305-949-1300; all events 5-9 p.m

The pool party:
The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Pool and Beach Club
The dress code: Tiki chic

This destination hotel in Hollywood -- which has been secretly dubbed the "Magic Kingdom" -- doesn't have a weekly pool party event as of now, but with a 4.5-acre lagoon-style pool and a 182-foot waterslide, it might as well be one. The 19,000-square-foot area is always a welcome retreat for hotel guests relaxing with friends in one of the pool's eight exclusive Indian-inspired "chickees" -- complete with televisions, aluminum lounge chairs and ceiling fans -- before cooling off in the water (only those staying at the Hard Rock are allowed to take a dip and enjoy the underwater music). Non-hotel guests seeking to check out the pool area's free live entertainment -- such as performances by upbeat Latin Fire on Saturdays from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m -- on Wednesday nights and on the weekend can rent a chickee for $150 with a group of their closest pals starting at 6:30 p.m.
