Travie McCoy performs at the WGC Cadillac Championship this Saturday
Former frontman for Gym Class Heroes gives golfers a reason to bust a move.
6:30 p.m. Saturday
Trump National Doral Miami, 4400 NW 87th Ave., Miami
Golf fans attending the WGC-Cadillac Championship (Thursday-Sunday) who also love great pop music might want to stick around after Saturday’s match at Trump National Doral, as hip-hop hitmaker Travie McCoy will perform live beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The singer/rapper - who topped the charts with his band Gym Class Heroes’ hits “Cupid’s Chokehold/Breakfast in America” and “Stereo Hearts (Feat. Adam Levine),” plus had solo smashes including “Billionaire (Feat. Bruno Mars)” and “Rough Water (Feat. Jason Mraz)” – will provide a harmonious and melodious ending to a day filled with long drives and clutch putts by PGA superstars including Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
McCoy talked to Miami.com about the show, his upcoming album, and just how much of a golf fan he is.
What attracted you to perform at this tournament?
I was just stoked that they just wanted me to be a part of it. The tournament’s kind of the crème de la crème of tournaments – you have everyone participating in it, and they asked me to be a part of it, and it’s an honor.
Are you a big golf fan?
You know what? Probably not – I have friends who are super-into golf, and they tried really hard to convert me. So I go out with them and kind of just enjoy the cocktails and driving the golf carts. I gave it a try a couple times, but the thing is, I’m six-foot five, so there’s a lot of room between the ball and myself. And me being uncoordinated as hell, and trying to roll that little-ass ball in the hole – it just wasn’t working. But I’ve had a lot of fun on golf courses hanging out with friends, and actually getting to understand the game, and they showed me that it wasn’t as boring as I thought it was.
What can we expect from your set?
For me, performing is just an exchange of energy – I kind of push energy out into the crowd in hopes that they reciprocate, and push the energy back. The minute I see a couple people dancing and really getting into it and having a good time is when I kind of lose myself. That’s all I ask for, is for people to let loose and let go of anything that’s been troubling them and enjoy themselves.
Will we hear a lot from the new album?
Yeah, I’ll be playing two or three new songs – I haven’t really had time to rehearse a lot of new material because I’ve been in the studio so much.
Does the new album have a title, and when will it hit the streets?
I can’t give the title out yet, but we’re shooting for summertime.
Will you perform any Gym Class Heroes stuff, or will it be all solo?
It depends – I kind of play that by ear. I’m not usually one for set lists. I get there, see what the vibe is, and whatever the first song is, whatever happens from that point on usually decides how the rest of the set will go. It’s basically reading a room and figuring out what they’re into and what they wanna get down with. My DJ, Boogie, and I have been working together for ages, so we can speak to each other with just our eyes, so either way it’s still gonna be a rocking time.
Are you happy to be coming down to Miami?
Actually, I live between Miami and New York, so I’m stoked to be coming back – it’s been awhile.
What inspired you to move to Miami?
I came down about seven years ago, working with [producers] Cool & Dre, and I just fell in love with it, man – I don’t know what it was, just something in the air. I just caught a super-creative spurt, and it didn’t go anywhere the whole time I was there, so I was like, “Hmm, I wonder if I came down here to stay, if I’d be productive all the time.”
I’ve always lived by water – I live in Aventura near Biscayne Bay, and you always have South Beach at your disposal as well – it’s not too far away.
