This Week's Screenings (6/23-6/26)
Monday, June 23
This Thursday, as part of its Janus Films Night series, the Upper Eastside Garden is screening Marco Bellochio's 1965 film Fists in the Pocket at 7 pm. This nuanced film about a young man's attempts to rid his grotesquely dysfunctional family of its many afflictions uses perversity and an offbeat sense of humor to implicate Catholic morality and bourgeois family values. Its confident style established Bellochio as a talented and socially conscious filmmaker in a decade when the French New Wave's directors were receiving most of the international film community's attention.
Upper Eastside Garden: 7244 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami: 305-984-3231. Tickets are $5 and include picnic mats or seats in the garden, a bag of popcorn, a round of putt-putt and access to the new upstairs lounge.
This Wednesday, June 25 Miami's Cine-Improv Troupe will be performing its interpretation of the 2008 Cannes Film Festival at the Miami Beach Cinematheque. Miami Improv Actor Michael Murray will host a group of South Florida's best improvisers as they perform a live "movie" based on audience suggestions. The event starts at 8:30 pm.
Miami Beach Cinematheque: 512 Espanola Way, Miami Beach; 305-673-4567. Tickets for non-member are $12; $10 for members and students.

The documentary Up The Yangtze, which explores the possible effects that the construction of the Three Gorges Damn will have on China's historic Yangtze River, is playing at 6 pm on June 25 and June 26.
The animated film Chicago 10 is screening at 8 pm on June 25 and June 26. This film played on opening night of the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Director Brett Morgan blends animation with actual footage to tell the story of the violent turmoil that took place outside the 1968 Democratic Convention and the outrageous trial that followed it.
Cinema Paradiso in Ft. Lauderdale: 503 SE 6 Street, Ft. Lauderdale; 954-525-3456. Tickets for non-member are $10; $6 for members and students.
