Put your elbows into action when you sample beers and just about all the cocktails and spirits you can handle at a few events this month. Prefer to be in the dark? Then head to the cinema for the GEMS Festival or for an Italian film adventure. And before the Miami Heat take over the AAA, Colombian hottie J Balvin heats things up.
Here’s what October has in store for Miami.
1. Coral Gables Oktoberfest at Fritz & Franz Bierhaus
Raise your bier stein at Fritz & Franz Bierhaus’ annual Coral Gables Oktoberfest and party on the daily with music, yodeling and lots and lots of beer.
2. House of Horror
It’s a month-long fright fest with a Haunted Carnival that features areas like Freak Emporium, 1455 Asylum and Gates of Phobia. There are also plenty of carnival rides and the Phantasma Music Festival with the “Despacito” singer himself Luis Fonsi, Dillon Francis, DJ Flosstradamus and the group Cheat Codes.
3. Sam Adams Octoberfest
Three-day celebration of German culture, history and beer with food, live music and Bavarian entertainment. The Sam Adams “Brewlympics” include a Giant Beer Dunk Tank, Jenga and Beer Pong plus corn hole as well as a Raise the Stein and Miss Octoberfest competitions.
4. Animate Florida
The world of Anime converges on Miami with three days of cosplay contests, celebrity guest appearances of everyone from the anime and cosplay world, wrestling matches, round-the-clock anime viewing and plenty of video game contests.
5. XI Cinema Italy Miami
Check out the best in short films, documentaries, and feature-length film from Italy along with tributes at Colony Theatre, along with dinners and cocktail receptions in venues throughout the city.
6. Miami Broward Carnival
This exciting festival celebrates the culture, traditions, art and heritage of the Caribbean with a parade, musical performances, Caribbean food and the crowning of the Carnival King and Queen.
7. Band of Horses
The indie rock, Grammy-nominated group who have opened for the likes of Pearl Jam and Neil Young, perform music from their four studio albums including songs from “Infinite Arms” and “Mirage Rock.”

8. GEMS Film Festival
Miami International Film Festival’s four-day mid-season mini festival returns with a look at the season’s finest new cinematic works.

10. III Points Festival
Headlining the three-day music festival are the rarely seen live in concert Gorillaz best known for the their hits “Clint Eastwood” and “Feel Good Inc.” Headlining the other two days are Nicolas Jaar and The xx. Each day features a line-up of DJs, EDM artists, singer/songwriters, girl groups, R&B performers and hip hop groups, culminating in more than 85 performers taking the stage. Tech talks, lectures, labs and gallery showcases are also part of the festival.
Celebrate brews from around the world and across the nation with tastings of more than 300 varieties, cooking demos, a home-brew contest, live music and more.
12. South Beach Seafood Festival
Seafood lovers reel in some of the tastiest dishes in South Florida at this festival that brings out some of the area’s finest dining establishments to offer their most inspired recipes starring the ocean’s bounty.
13. Coconut Grove Pumpkin Patch Festival
Pick out the perfect pumpkin for Halloween at this pumpkin patch in the middle of Coconut Grove. Kids can enjoy a variety of activities like a corn stalk maze, fun zone, rides, inflatables, shows at the main stage, scarecrow-making plus more than 5,000 pumpkins.
14. Coral Gables Hispanic Cultural Festival
This event showcases Hispanic song, dance, folklore and art, and includes family fun at the Children’s Pavilion, the Artists Boulevard, vendors, live music and a dominoes tournament.
15. Nightmare on the Beach
The Little Lighthouse Foundation’s annual Halloween extravaganza is one of the places to see and be seen in full Halloween regalia. The fun includes live entertainment, plenty of cocktails, over-the-top decor and a fun chance to support The Little Lighthouse Foundation.
This family-friendly event gives the kids a chance to parade through the zoo in search of candy, enter a costume contest, watch special performances, make Halloween crafts and see the wild animals while they get their Halloween goodies.
17. Vizcaya Halloween Sundowner
One of Miami’s premiere Halloween event where locals don their most creative Halloween costumes and party at the historic Vizcaya estate to raise funds for its preservation and protection.
