Live music is (finally) making a comeback in Miami and we couldn’t be more happy for both the local music scene, and those residents who long for a good show on a daily basis. From Little Havana to Midtown and Little Haiti, musical jams are finding welcoming homes for good to the delight of us all.
Standing quietly ahead of it all, like a portal into a new musical dimension is The North Beach Bandshell, an historic landmark preserving live music.
The oceanfront amphitheater is a testament to the MiMo architectural movement of the ’50s, with sweeping shapes and textural breezeways that make even a summer night open for dancing. With the help of The Rhythm Foundation and other local outlets, The North Beach Bandshell has seen a comeback in recent years and it’s only getting stronger. The spike is due in part to their inspiring combination weekly programming like Dance Band Nights, hosting album release celebrations for Miami’s biggest acts, and ensuring that no matter the size of the event, local bands will always have a slot on the lineup ahead of the heavy-hitters.
This year alone the momentum has released a noticeably powerful schedule of festivals, like the highly-anticipated
GroundUp Festival next February, hosted by the Grammy-winning Snarky Puppy and this weekend’s House of Creatives Music Festival hosted by Mishu, another powerful collective to come out of Miami.
This weekend’s festival means more to our city than you might think. Sure, it brings in the big names that’ll hook the crowds like The Flaming Lips, Crystal Castles and Cold War Kids; and shows a vibrant and varied set of acts from Breakbot and Shigeto to the ever-charming Empress Of. But what really stands apart is the well-curated and equally as diverse selection of local acts joining the ranks and sure to wow the crowds–whether they know they’re from Miami or not. ArtOfficial, Miami’s own hip hop heroes,; Millionyoung, a local version of Taylor McFerrin; Hunters of The Alps, a Peruvian-born new wave outfit calling our city home, and a handful of other strong locals covering all aspects of the sonic spectrum.
