It’s Caribbean-American Heritage Month celebrating the uniqueness of the Caribbean including its rhythmic music, laid back flavor, beautiful beaches and year round gorgeous weather, the unique dialect and patois, and a rich cultural heritage. The Caribbean is also famous for its food from everything jerk to curry spices, rum cakes, and definitely the specialty rums and beers. What better way to celebrate and experience the unique tastes, sounds, and colors of Caribbean culture and cuisine than at the annual Taste of the Caribbean on Friday, June 12 – Sunday, June 14, 2015 presented by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association. The event is a foodie and cooking enthusiast’s paradise as the art of Caribbean cooking, island fare, and libations are featured.
The three-day festival includes several special events as well as the Taste of The Islands festival. Top chefs and bartenders from the region compete for honors in a variety of food and beverage competitions with 10 culinary teams representing Anguilla, Bahamas, Barbados, Bonaire, British Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, Suriname, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. During a series of competitions, chefs and bartenders from each country present a variety of Caribbean entrees and cocktails as they battle for top honors including: Caribbean Culinary Team of the Year, Caribbean Chef of the Year, Caribbean Pastry Chef of the Year, Caribbean Bartender of the Year, and Caribbean Junior Chef of the Year.
For the Caribbean National Teams Culinary Competition Lunch on Friday, June 12 from 12pm – 2pm, teams will go head-to-head with lunch including three-course meals paired with wines and prepared by teams from the Bahamas, Barbados, Bonaire, the British Virgin Islands and the US Virgin Islands. Tickets are $50 per the Competition Lunch.
The Caribbean National Teams Culinary Competition Dinner on Friday, June 12 from 7:30pm – 9:30pm features three-course meals paired with wines prepared by teams from Anguilla, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Suriname, and reigning Caribbean Culinary Team of the Year – Puerto Rico. Tickets for this event are $50. A special combination package for both the lunch and dinner competitions are available for $85.
On Saturday, June 13 from 6:30pm – 9pm is the Taste of the Islands festival highlighting the culture of the Caribbean through a variety of gourmet appetizers and desserts, signature cocktails, authentic Caribbean music, and various Caribbean countries featured. Tickets to the Taste of the Islands festival are $40 or can be purchased as a package to also include the competition lunch and dinner all for $115.
