Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry – a critically acclaimed documentary profiling the granddaddy of American tattooing Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins – screens tomorrow night at Miami Art Space.
Blending American nationalist iconography with images from the sea and traditional Hawaiian and Japanese culture, Collins is credited with creating much of the vocabulary of modern tattooing. Plus, the dude was just a cool, hard-living, ex-sailor who would knock his own teeth out with a chopstick and a hammer.
Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with the film’s director Erich Weiss, free Sailor Jerry Rum and a live band.
