From art exhibits of voodoo gods to live Opera, here’s what’s going on in Zone 1.
Zone 1 – North Beach
- Normandy Fountain Stage (Rue Vendome between Normandy Drive and 71st Street)
Performances at 6, 8, 10 and 11 p.m. here. The first is composer Ben Neill and Lemur – instruments that play themselves (a creation by musician and computer programmer Eric Singer).At 8, watch the Miami-based Dance Now! Ensemble perform, followed by Grammy-winning saxophonist Felipe Lamoglia. At 11, it’s pianist Silvano Monasterios.
- Tamarind Thai Restaurant (946 Normandy Drive)
This site opens with an art exhibit from 6:30-7:30, followed by a fashion show at 8 with singer Janelle Sanchez performing. At 9, groove to Anthony Corrado’s saxophone.
- Byron Carlyle Theater (500 71st Street)
It’s first come, first served here – so grab a seat quickly. At 7, catch Teatro en Miami – a group that performs plays in Little Havana. At 9, Theater company Ground Up & Rising will perform Martin McDonagh’s “The Pillowman.” From 11:30-4:30, it’s the “Next Generation 2010 Short Film Festival.”
- North Shore Park Youth Center (501 72nd Street)
At 6 p.m., guitarist Will Thomas plays songs from his Spanglish Sing-Along CD. At 7, Miami-based artist Pablo Cano performs in this one-man show inspired by 1920’s New York vaudeville. At 8 and 9, performers from the Miracle Theatre’s musical theater program emulate selections from the Tony Award winning musical, “In The Heights.” For kids, there’s a 30-foot-tall titanic slide from 6 to 11 p.m. Also, check out Artformz Alternative’s 30-foot tall inflatable sculptures during the same time.
- North Beach Band Shell (7255 Collins Ave.)
Opera fans can catch Miami Lyric Opera’s “La Traviata” at 7 p.m.The show will be performed outdoors.
- Sazon Cuban Cusine (7305 Collins Ave.)
From 10 p.m. to midnight, listen to guitarist AmTonio on Sazon’s patio.
- Ocean Terrace (73-75 Streets, East of Collins Ave.)
Haitian artist Edouard Duval-Carrie is creating sculptures of voodoo gods which will migrate down the streets of Miami Beach in a parade. The preview takes place at the Ocean Terrace at 11 p.m.
