Your girlfriend has threatened to break it off if you take her on one more date that consists of a “romantic” dinner at Macaroni Grill (anywhere you can draw on the tablecloth with crayons is not considered romantic), followed by another predictable action flick. It’s not your fault you live in Kendall — a.k.a chain restaurant/strip mall capital of Miami. But, it is your fault for falling into the Kendall cliché. Here’s a guide to help you when she says those dreadful words: “Honey, let’s do something different tonight.” And, you won’t even have to leave your ‘hood.
Prove you’ve paid attention to her countless childhood stories of skating to Debbie Deb’s “When I Hear Music,” at Hot Wheels (now Super Wheels) by taking her to the rink’s Monday Adult Night. Nearly everything has stayed the same since the rink’s name changed, featuring the original circular skating area with signature center dance floor, primary-color booths in which many of us grew up eating birthday cake and original DJ Boogieman George spinning old school skating classics. If you can’t make it out on a school night, the rink is also opened to all ages on Friday and Saturday nights. An evening of skating will set you back $8 each for admission, plus $2 quad rentals or $3 if you prefer in-line skates. If you really want to impress, show off your skills in the game room with air hockey, ski ball and Pac-Man.

After you’ve built up an appetite, drive up just a few blocks on 120th Avenue, where you’ll find hole-in-the-wall Argentine steakhouse Che Tito’s. The brick-wall restaurant is no larger than your average studio apartment, but its menu is far from average. Treat her to a classic Argentine skirt steak grilled to perfection and topped with chimichurri sauce. Choose from a variety of sides including crunchy French fries and classic fried yucca. If you’re a vegetarian, there’s also a whole portion of the menu dedicated to pasta and pizza.

At this point in the night your stock has risen tremendously, but don’t get overly confident. Don’t forget the most important part — satisfying her. Her sweet tooth at least. Let homey coffeehouse Joffrey’s help seal the deal with its mouth-watering desserts and equally tasty coffees. End the night surrounded by local art on the walls and a laid-back atmosphere that invites you to take your time while enjoying Joffrey’s famous Ice Cream Coffee Dream or homemade fried banana cheesecake. Gain some extra points by mentioning all coffee beans are free trade – and letting her have the last bite.
