Bling and Hip Hop royalty go together like Jay Z and Beyoncé — so it’s no surprise we chatted up business magnate Russell Simmons at Van Cleef & Arpels this past weekend. In town to host an event alongside Allison and Chip Brady, the French maison unveiled their latest collection — Perlée Couleurs — where sales benefited Simmons’ charity, the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.
What is the mission behind Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation? The work we do for children is very important. I don’t think there’s a greater discipline than creating arts for the children in schools — imagination is everything. Children need to exercise those creative muscles.
You visit Miami quite often, what do you love most? I like the beach because the water is always warm. During this time of year, the weather is absolutely perfect.
How does the Magic City rate in your book? Absolutely. You’re definitely in my top three favorites cities next to New York and Los Angeles.
You impart so many words of wisdom to the world via social media. Who inspires you? I learn from anyone who gives me the opportunity. And of course I’m inspired by some of the great teachers — all the prophets and Eckhart Tolle — I gave Oprah his book.
You’re a devout vegan. What’s your go-to restaurant in Miami for grub? Soho Beach House makes great vegan food for me.
Meditation and yoga are synonymous with your name. How often do you practice? Every single day.
What’s on your agenda during this particular visit? I’m going to speak to a bunch of children about entrepreneurship for P. Diddy’s Revolt Music Conference at the Fontainebleau. I’m going to teach them, ‘Give… until they can’t live without you.’
