‘Naked Magic’ brings cheeky tricks to Fort Lauderdale

Their publicist says Australian magicians Christopher Wayne and Mike Tyler hide “nothing up their sleeves.” By the end of two Naked Magic shows Saturday and Sunday at Parker Playhouse, Fort Lauderdale audiences will know whether they’re hiding anything up their pant legs, too.

Wayne says he and Tyler, now known as the Naked Magicians, were best friends with a magic act when they got the idea a year-and-a-half ago to lose their costumes onstage.

“We’ve got Florida to thank,” Wayne said. “A movie was set there, Magic Mike.”

Wayne said that after Channing Tatum’s movie came out, everyone would ask Tyler, “How big is your magic wand?” and “Can you make your clothes disappear?”

“We looked at each other and said why not do what no one has ever done before — make the world’s first naughty, cheeky magic show,” Wayne said. “And that’s what we did.”

He describes the show as “kind of like a first date.”

“You hang out, have a few drinks, have a laugh. if you do everything right, you’re going to see us naked by the end of night.”

The Naked Magic Show was an instant hit, performed throughout Australia, New Zealand and England. This is the Naked Magicians’ first time performing in America.

“We can’t believe how popular it is. It’s changed our lives,” Wayne said. “The show is actually a very strong magic show. It’s very important to say that — it’s not just a male revue. But we are going to give you a bit of skin, so it’s not just a clever name.”

Wayne said that the first public performance he and Tyler did, “we were terrified, mortified, filled with nerves.”

“Now, we’ve done the show hundreds of times,” he said. “The best part of my entire day is when I’m standing naked in front of 1,000 people, when they are shouting, cheering. We weren’t strippers. We had to learn to be sexy.”

Although children aren’t permitted, sometimes Naked Magic is for families. “Surprisingly, yes,” Wayne said. “When we did our Australian tour this year, we both had our parents at the show. It’s kind of cool. They’re really proud of us. My mom saw me naked when I was born, so that’s alright.”

Wayne and Tyler, both 31 of Brisbane, Australia, plan to do Naked Magic a long time, but they “are very aware we have a shelf life.”

“We don’t know when that will be. Until then, we both take care of our bodies and can’t wait to get on stage,” says Wayne, who lost 65 pounds since first performing Naked Magic. “Mike has been a swimmer since he was 15 years old, so I had a lot of catching up to do.”

Wayne said he and Tyler are both straight and single, but love having mixed audiences.

“It’s the ultimate girls’ night out, but it’s for everyone. It’s for gay people, it’s for straight people, people of all ages as long as you’re an adult,” he said. “Mike and I are very supportive of LGBT rights. It’s so cool to see everyone having a good time. It’s not crude, but it is very naughty.”

Tyler recently posted on Facebook: “Photo of me naked from behind: 250 likes. Photo of me standing with a girl: 5 likes. Understanding my Instagram (@miketylermagic) followers: Priceless.”

After most performances, the Naked Magicians like to mingle with their fully clothed audiences.

Says Wayne: “If I had dollar for every time some woman or gay man grabbed me on the bum, I would be a wealthy, wealthy man.”
