Miami Soul feature: Local black fashion designers to know

Miami Soul – your ultimate source for places to go, people to see, and things to do in Black Miami. New name but same great content on the black social scene. For a list of weekly reoccurring events, check out miami.com/miami-soul.

Miami’s fashion scene is growing and is quickly becoming known for our own version of major fashion events from Miami Swim Week to Miami Fashion Week. Earlier in the summer I attended a fashion show hosted by Cynthia Bailey during Miami Fashion Week and not only did it showcase emerging black designers with designs ranging from swimwear to evening wear, it also gave black models an opportunity to shine at this annual fashion event. G Saints Swimwear and Allusions by A. LeKay were two local black designers that debut their line during the fashion show and shows the promise of haute couture and quality to land on national fashion runways around the world.

GSaints Swimwear

Launched in July 2011, GSaints Swimwear is sleek and fun and made perfectly for women who are confident, daring, and feel ultra sexy in their own skin.

The two local designers hit it off while learning about the ins and outs of the fashion industry while working at major retailers including, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Nordstrom. Since then they have been inseparable in business when they decided to join forces for their common passion for fashion. The duo is now on their third collection,  “Polynesian Princess,” which debuts in Spring/Summer 2015 and features a perfect mix of tribal patterns, bright colors, and prints.

Allusions by A. Lekay

Designers/Owners: Altricia Cook
Style: Luxury that doesn’t blend!

Lightbulb moments can become a goldmine, and that’s been the case for Altrichia Cook, designer extraordinaire of Allusions by A. Lekay Swimwear. The Florida A&M University graduate was simply searching for a chic swimsuit that she could wear on a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2013 that would hide her post-baby stomach imperfections while also feeling sexy. All she could find during her swimsuit search were monokinis, which she refused to wear, and pieces that didn’t flatter her belly, so like the motto goes “find a way or make one.” So she did.

Eighteen months later and after creating her own swimsuit for her beach vacation to Puerto Rico, Alicia’s designs have since been featured in over 10 fashion shows across the globe, including a showcase at the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion in September 2013 and 2014 and Miami Fashion Week in May 2014. Lending her own frustrations to her design inspiration, Allusions by A.Lekay specializes in only Highwaistkini™ style swimwear for the everyday woman who wants to feel sexy without having to reveal her imperfections. The signature look for the brand uses a mix of bold colors and unique prints.

Recently, Allusions by A.Lekay launched its latest collection SS ’15, Swim After Dark, which consists of the sexy, opulent color black accented with bold, neon colors that have a glow effect when night falls. Swim After Dark can be pre-ordered and will be available for sale in Spring/Summer 2015. The entire collection is available online at AllusionsbyALekay.com with shipment available globally.
