There are a lot of events going on this Halloween weekend and not all of them are about the spooky holiday. At Miami On The Cheap, nothing is scarier than getting ripped off, so we’ve got the highlights here for the budget-conscious:
We have more than 30 free and cheap parties listed for this Halloween weekend, and the list keeps growing, so there is really no excuse for anyone to miss out. Pull out the brightly colored tights and costume — we know you have one so don’t make us look it up on an old Facebook post! All joking aside, there is something for everyone here, and in all neighborhoods from Miami Beach to Homestead. There are non-spooky parties for the young ‘uns and scare-the-idiocy-out-of -you for the teens and young adults. Wanna yowl-o-ween with your pooch? It’s there, too. Find something you will enjoy.
Outdoor jazz live
Cuban-born drummer Ignacio Berroa will fire up the crowd with his combination of folkloric rhythms with contemporary jazz and funk at an outdoor concert at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami on Oct. 28. It’s free for North Miami residents, but anyone can get in with a donation. Berroa has received all kinds of awards for his music, including a lifetime achievement from the Montreal Jazz Festival, and has collaborated with legendary artists Dizzy Gillespie, Jack Bruce, Wynton Marsalis and Jaco Pastorius.
Skate by the bay
New York City may have its iconic ice skating at Rockefeller Center, but Miami has its roller skating by the bay. Dust off the old roller skates and get ready to roll outdoors during the Bay Skate Miami event taking place Oct. 29 at Bayfront Park. Admission is free, and rentals are provided for a charge, if you need them. There’s a session for young children and another for faster skaters. Food trucks are expected and live music is scheduled.
Classical piano concerts
If Halloween isn’t your thing and you prefer a weekend of classical piano, Steinway Piano Gallery of Coral Gables will host a free double-header performance with award-winning Serbian pianist, pop singer-songwriter Ana Nikolic and 8-year-old rising star Jana Koenig from Vienna on Oct. 28. The next day, on Oct. 29, they will host an afternoon of music through the ages with Gabriel La Salette on baritone and Marcela Hernandez on piano.
‘Fiddler on the Roof’
Perhaps the theater is more your style. See the acclaimed play “Fiddler on the Roof” for free at Barry University from Oct. 27-30. The story line is about Tevye, a Jewish milkman in early 1900s Russia, sees his three eldest daughters married, each one moving further from traditional ways, and must cope with the growing anti-Jewish sentiment in his country. Directed by John Manzelli.
