Homegrown designer Rene Ruiz showcased his designs at Paris Fashion Week earlier this year. This Thursday the world will see more of his made-in-Miami pieces at the premier of Sacha Baron Cohen’s flick The Dictator. The co producer’s wife and mother will be wearing his designs. The film debuts in London.
The Cuban born designer has appeared in Vogue and W Magazine.
“A lot of people identify my designs as having a Miami flair. I interpret classic silhouettes with a modern glamorous feel,” said Ruiz.
In fact, his early inspiration stems from old Hollywood. The Miami International Fine Arts College graduate was captivated by the clothes worn by stars like Greata Garbo, Joan Crawford, Grace Kelly and Cary Grant.
Locally, fans include shoe designer Lisa Pliner, Real Housewives of Miami’s Leah Black and Alexia Echevarria, “Basketball Wives” Executive Producer Shaunie O’Neil and Univision anchorwoman and journalist Maria Elena Salinas.
“Having one of Rene Ruiz’s designs is an experience like no other,” said Lisa Pliner. “This is a designer who knows women, and what women like. To have something made to fit you like it should is an experience you can’t buy in a department store.”
And for the fellas, well, Ruiz recently started a collection for men. Singer Enrique Iglesias is a fan.
Ruiz is based in Coral Gables and has a 5,000-square-foot flagship store.
