Historic Virginia Key Beach Park hosts 70th Anniversary Celebration

Only 70 years ago, Historic Virginia Key Beach Park was established as an official “colored only” recreation site as a direct response to a protest by Miami’s African-American community, which was being systematically shut out of public beaches.

To commemorate this historic spot, the community is invited to attend a day of celebration with music, a classic car show, live performances by Maryel Epps, junkanoo bands, rides on the mini train and carousel, plus prizes and giveaways from 11 a.m. till 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1.

To preserve the history of beach, visitors who experienced the years when the beach was segregated are invited to visit the “Time Tunnel Video Booth” and record their stories for the park’s historic archives. Historic Virginia Key Beach Park is located at 4020 Virginia Beach Dr., Miami; virginiakeybeachpark.net.
