The lowdown: One day, hair stylist Oribe finds himself tousling Mariah Carey’s mane for American Idol and the next, he’s cutting a local’s locks at his low-key Lincoln Road salon and then it’s off to Milan for a Dolce & Gabbana print campaign. Ah, such is the life of a celebrity hair stylist.
Cuban-American Oribe’s eponymous South Beach salon has been getting locals red carpet ready for 18 years now and boasts a client roster that reads like the pages of US Weekly: Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Lopez, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington to name a few. “My salon has always kept me grounded,” Oribe says of his namesake salon.
The ‘hood: Located a puddle jump away from Lincoln Road on Euclid Avenue, Oribe’s Salon is nestled in the heart of South Beach. “Miami Beach is home. It’s where me and my three dogs live. My idea of dream hair is the young ladies you see on Lincoln Road with sun-kissed blonde ends,” Oribe says.
The vibe: Replete with Chrome Hearts wig stands, slick floors, dark woods and Porsche Design chairs, the salon is minimalist with an edge. “There is no pretentiousness here — we pride ourselves on being casual and clean,” Oribe says.
The highlights: Styling services include women’s haircuts (starting at $100), men’s haircuts ($75 and up), coloring (starting at $100). In-house hair colorist Sharon Torres is a pro with balayage (hair painting).
The Mane Event: On June 9th and 10th 2013 at The Fillmore Miami Beach, Oribe presents Backstage: La Fama. Now in its third year, the event mixes hairstyling, makeup, photography and entertainment hosted by Oribe and his glam squad. Unlike run-of-the-mill hair shows, Oribe says, “Backstage is about inspiring guests to get creative! Also new this year? I’ll be choosing one guest to win a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a six-month mentorship with me.” Shear genius!
