Mix a dash of trendy shops, a pinch of yummy eateries and tons of Upper East Siders just waiting to stir up a delicious community event, and what have you got? Parties galore… and everyone’s invited.
It was just a matter of time before someone realized that all of the ingredients were present and ready for a fun-filled Biscayne Boulevard bash — Cinco de MiMo, which will celebrate the mid-century Miami Modern (MiMo, get it?) architecture present on this stretch of Biscayne — with a Mexican twist.
The party starts Friday, May 2, with a kick-off party at the Upper Eastside Garden from 7-11 p.m. The garden will be transformed into a Mexican marketplace. Expect live music, loteria para ganar prizes from the local businesses, contests and caramba, a Freida Kahlo look-a-like contest (no tweezers allowed). Later, stick around for a screening of the cult U.S./Mexican film Brainiac.
On Saturday morning, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., check out the Green Market at Legion Park on 66th Street. Fresh stone crabs, savory local grown veggies, spices, homemade jams and jellies and a variety of plants and orchids will be on sale. Restaurants and cafes in the area are preparing specially priced menus for neighborhood visitors. At 10:30 a.m., the Cushman & Morningside school choruses will delight market shoppers with their finely tuned voices.
From 5-9 p.m., stroll up and down the Boulevard from 69th to 77th Street and you’ll get a visual taste of street performers, live musical entertainers, free film screenings, wine samplings and pairings, face-painting, hula hoop contests, a bounce house for the kiddies, balloons, clowns, belly dancing, DJ hits, strolling Mariachi bands and a sprinkling of antiques cars. Miami’s very own always-dressed-to-the-nines, never speechless, drag queen, Elaine Lancaster is hosting the Sock Hop at Karma Carwash & Café.
The Boulevard has had an adventurous history, documented by long time Belle Meade resident Antolin Garcia Carbonell, who will give a free historic walking tour that leaves the Vagabond Motel (7301 Biscayne Blvd.) at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Over sixty boutiques, fashion spaces and art galleries are going all out to make your visit to the Upper East Side unforgettable, like Open Doors. The furniture and accessories boutique will host a party from 5-8 p.m., complete with taco stand by local taco shack Ver Daddy’s, works by Mexican artist Alekxey Sabido, complimentary tequila cocktails and mariachis.
On Sunday, browse around and then meander over to Uva, where the Little Miss MiMo pageant takes place at 3:00 p.m. Many eateries are offering scrumptious brunches, dinners and 2-4-1 beverage specials during the three days of festivities.
For those who can’t function without their wheels, don’t get your bunions fired up: MiMo has shuttle buses available from 5-9 p.m.
Says Fran Rollason, President of the MiMo Biscayne Association about the reason for the event: “It was our goal to be able to provide an educational yet entertaining schedule of MiMo area activities to an audience that may not be aware of its treasures, as well as to celebrate an audience that has already embraced it.”
