The Miami Book Fair International isn’t until November but the poster will be unveiled at a party Saturday afternoon in Wynwood, in advance of the monthly art walk. Or you can kick off the weekend on Calle Ocho on Friday night during the Little Havana Art Walk.
On Saturday, spend time with the family while enjoying culture and interactive fun at History Miami, Perez Art Museum Miami or the Coral Gables Museum, all of which have free family days. Saturday night, the New World Symphony kicks off its season and you can watch for free on the Wallcast outdoors.
Colorful Wynwood mural for this year’s poster
The Miami Book Fair International is hosting a poster unveiling party at a designated Wynwood Wall Saturday at 4 p.m. Street artist Diana “Didi” Contreras unveils her “Three Muses” mural at the corner of Northwest 25th Street and Second Avenue. The piece will be photographed by Miami Herald photographer Carl Juste and be featured on this year’s official poster. Enjoy Jugofresh cold-press juices and light bites during the event. Admission is free.
Art on Calle Ocho
The colorful artworks, both in galleries and on walls along Calle Ocho, are the highlight of the Friday night Little Havana Art Walk from 7-11 p.m. Pop in and out of galleries between 14th and 17th avenues and see paintings, sculptures, mixed media and contemporary pieces. The Futurama Building on 16th Avenue features works by several artists under one roof.
Museum family days on Saturday
Whether you’re in downtown Miami or Coral Gables, on Saturday you can enjoy family day festivities at a museum for free. History Miami is open for free from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a look at textile art with artist-in-residence Nancy Billings leading quilt-making and textile artwork activities. At the Perez Art Museum Miami, kids can create art and the whole family can take a tour, from 1-4 p.m. And in Coral Gables it’s Family Day on Aragon at Coral Gables Museum. From 2-5 p.m. there’s an Everglades-themed live animal presentation, a performance by Miami Youth for Chamber and Everglades fossil exploration with the Frost Science Museum.
New World Symphony kick-off concert
You can watch the New World Symphony kick-off concert outdoors for free at the Soundscape Wallcast on Miami Beach. Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas leads the musicians in the concert “Russian Musical Soul” featuring the Dmitri Prokovsky Ensemble and pieces by Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. Get there early for the pre-concert chat at 6:30 p.m. and to grab a good spot before the music starts at 7:30 p.m.
Viva Italy in Hollywood
The South Florida Italian Culture & Heritage Festival comes to the ArtsPark at Young Circle in Hollywood on Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. You can try your hand at a few rounds of the classic Italian outdoor game bocce. There will be Italian specialty foods for sale and musical entertainment. Performing will be Spanky & Dino, The Mystics and their doo wop sound and Jimmy Cavallo & His House Rockers. There will also be kids’ activities. Admission is free.
