Free and cheap things to do in Miami – Nov. 7-9

Get outdoors while the getting’s good. This is the perfect weekend to plan plenty of al fresco evenings, and it’s all about the arts and culture. Choose between riding a trolley through downtown Coral Gables on Gallery Night, letting your feet do the walking through Wynwood and the Design District or parking it on the lawn at Soundscape Park.

Other free events around Miami this weekend are Saturday and Sunday’s Family Day on Aragon with activities at the Coral Gables Museum, free entrance to the Perez Art Museum Miami on Saturday, where you can then stick around and watch the cruise ships depart, or a free yoga class at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami on Saturday morning.

Friday night in the Gables
Fill your appetite for art and then feed your appetite. Start the night gallery hopping around the Gables, with a little help from the trolley, sipping wine, nibbling on cheese and rubbing elbows with other art aficionados during Gallery Night from 6-10 p.m. Once you’ve had your fix of art, head to Giralda Avenue between Galiano and Ponce de Leon Boulevard, better known as “restaurant row,” from 7 p.m. to midnight for the return of Giralda Under the Stars. That’s when they close off the street and diners enjoy live entertainment and dining al fresco. You can always eat first, too.

Take in New World Symphony free
The free Wallcast concerts of the New World Symphony at Soundscape continue to grow in popularity so getting there early and grabbing a spot on the lawn is highly recommended. It’s a chance to see world-class musicians at their best performing for free. Saturday night at 7:30 the symphony will perform Mozart’s “Jupiter.” Remember to pack a picnic.

Hang out at hipster central on Saturday night
For people watching with the artistic set, including street artists creating pieces on the spot and impromptu performances, the place to be Saturday night is Wynwood for the free monthly art walk. The galleries are open from 7-10 p.m. but there’s plenty going on once they close, too, in restaurants and bars. For a quieter evening, head to the Design District just a few blocks north and take in the restaurants, galleries and shops.

Outdoor family flick at Pinecrest Gardens
Taking kids to see the latest animated film can be just as much fun for the adults, given that the people who write these movies know to pepper the dialogue and action with adult humor that goes over the kids’ heads. Despicable Me 2, being screened at Pinecrest Gardens on Friday at 8 p.m., is the perfect example. There’s a flashlight tour of the gardens at 7:30 and 7:45 (bring your own) and popcorn, hot dogs and other goodies are for sale. Movie is $5.

Discounted entrance to Flamingo Gardens
Feel good about doing something great by donating a food bank item when you visit Flamingo Gardens. The nice gesture will get you 25% off the entrance fee for the entire month of November. One discount is given with each food item. Regular entrance fee is $18 for 12 and older; $10 for ages 3 to 11 and free for kids under 3.
