This weekend marks the start of hurricane season, meaning more indoor activities as the weather gets warmer and the rain showers come more often.
But it’s not too late for fun outdoor activities, even if the movies are moving from the beach to the pool.

Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun May 31-June 2.
Swing over to hear jazz
The monthly free Jazz at Moca is still celebrating the outdoors. This Friday, at 8 p.m., hear Jowee Omicil, a musician from Montreal with roots in Haiti, who plays the alto and tenor saxophone, soprano flute and clarinet. The museum is open free by donation from 7 to 10 p.m., and parking is free in the adjacent city lot.
Time for a ‘dive-in’ movie
The popular ‘dive-in’ movies at Grapeland Water Park in Miami kick off this weekend, with “Hunger Games” at 8 p.m. Friday. The fun starts at 5:30 p.m., when the water park opens for $5 Family Fridays, with reduced admission for the evening. After frolicking in all the pools for a few hours, everyone moves to the big pool in time for the film. The event continues the first Friday of the month through September.
Come in for culture
If you’d rather stay inside, this is a good weekend to visit a museum. Friday is the last day of Miami Museum Month, with 2-for-1 admission. Saturday is the Bank of America’s monthly Museums on Us promotion, which allows BofA and Merrill Lynch cardholders free admission to hundreds of museums nationwide, including nine in South Florida. The Wolfsonian offers free admission every Friday night.
Admission to the Gold Coast Railroad Museum is free Saturday, the first Saturday of the month. Plus, the Miami Science Museum is hosting a free hurricane preparation event Saturday that includes free admission all day as well as the chance to play meteorologist and learn about storms.
Dance in two languages
The monthly Viernes Culturales/Cultural Friday is Friday night, with art, music, face painting, food and more in and around Domino Plaza in Little Havana from 7 to 11 p.m. Meet in front of the Tower Theater at 7 p.m. for a free walking tour. The Miami Trolley will provide free transportation every 15 minutes from Mary Brickell Village and the Brickell Metrorail/Metromover station.
Dream (free) of great expense
The South Florida Boat Show runs Friday through Sunday at the Miami Beach Convention Center, with everything from inflatables to yachts on display. Remember that while the dreaming (and admission) are free, owning a boat is never cheap.
