Free and cheap things to do in Miami – May 30-June 1

As summer heads into South Florida, activities head indoors – unless it’s a flash mob in Doral.

Miami Museum Month, which provides buy one, get one free admission to 24 participating institutions, plus a chance to see all the museums if you buy a membership at one, ends Saturday.

Friday is Viernes Culturales/Cultural Friday in Little Havana, with music, art, food and fun on Southwest Eighth Street. If you’d rather see a movie, Visa Signature and Fandango are teaming up to offer buy one, get one free movie tickets on Fridays this summer.

Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for this weekend (May 30-June1).

He’ll blow his own horn
Jazz trumpeter Jean Caze is the featured performer Friday at the monthly free Jazz at MOCA concert at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami. Caze, winner of the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition, has played with Herbie Hancock, Najee, Arturo Sandoval, Roberta Flack, Al Jarreau, George Duke and Chicago, as well as opened for the Wynton Marsalis Quartet. The museum will be open by donation from 7 to 10 p.m. The music starts at 8 p.m.

Special on .38 special
The 1980s rock band .38 Special, known for its hits “Hold on Loosely,” “Caught Up in You” and “If I’d Been the One,” will give a free concert at 9 p.m. Saturday at Casino Miami Jai Alai. While general admission is free, you need tickets. Submit a request for two free general admission tickets here.

Shop until you’re ready to drop those hurricane supplies
This weekend will be part of Florida’s sales tax holiday for hurricane supplies. The event, which runs Saturday through June 8, waives the sales tax of purchases of specific hurricane preparedness items, including generators up to $750, flashlights, batteries, radios and coolers.

The hurricane experience, without the hurricane
Let the kids create a cloud in a bottle and play the role of meteorologist at Feel the Force, a day of hurricane preparedness Saturday organized by the International Hurricane Research Center and Miami-Dade County Emergency Management Department. The event includes free admission all day to the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, as well as games, music, food and information.

Flash mob in Doral
Doral may not be the first place you’re expect to see a flash mob, but the Flash Mob of Kindness will be PARK-ing (Performing Acts of Random Kindness) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at JC Bermudez Park. The event is part of the Keep Doral Beautiful Fair, which will include tree adoptions, music, food, a kids’ corner and hurricane preparedness information.
