This is the last weekend to visit Centro Cultural Espanol to watch the latest batch of 15-minute mini plays and also enjoy a flamenco show for the event’s finale. And if you’ve never visited the LGBT Visitors Center on South Beach now is the perfect time since they’re screening an award-winning documentary on a continuous loop all weekend.
This weekend is Jazz at MOCA in North Miami and Cultural Fridays in Little Havana, both on Friday night, and all types of performance art, music and video art are presented at four venues around the 305 during the Miami Performance Festival through Sunday. All three events are free.
Micro theater finale features fiery flamenco
If you haven’t had a chance to catch the microtheater series at Centro Cultural Espanol the finale is this weekend. Aside from showcasing several original 15-minute plays, which are replayed six times a night to a 15-member audience, on Sunday they’re featuring “Flamenco a La Lupe” a concert by Elena Andujar at 8 p.m. And before the plays at 6 p.m. they’re serving up cocktails along with Spain’s traditional paella dish. Admission is $5 for each short play.
LGBT topic at heart of award-winning documentary
Visiting the LGBT Visitors Center on South Beach is an ideal way to visit a historic Art Deco building and also this weekend is the last chance to watch an award-winning documentary screening there. Shunned: What it takes to be a woman, is the story of a group of trans women in the Philippines competing in a pageant who find strength in each other to face their struggles and trauma. The film, which won Best Documentary in the New York and Nevada film festivals, is showing on a continuous loop Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cheap kids flick at AMC Theaters
The loveable and quirky SpongeBob Squarepants’ popularity with the kids seems to keep going strong after all these years on Nickelodeon. That’s why SpongeBob and the gang – Patrick, Squidward, the greedy Mr. Crabbs and loveable Sandy the squirrel are being featured this weekend in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of water showing at noon Friday through Sunday in AMC’s Aventura and Sunset Place Theaters. Tickets are $4.99 and proceeds benefit AMC Cares Charitable Fund and Will Rogers Institute.
Kids bowl free at Bird Bowl
One of the best feelings and also the perfect excuse to show some swagger, is when you’ve bowled a strike. This weekend, give the kids an opportunity to show some game and take them to Bird Bowl where on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. they can bowl a couple of games for free. Shoe rental is required and not included and coupons need to be downloaded. Offer is only available to kids 15 and younger.
Free Friday night concert at Holiday Park
Slip on your country boots and hat and head to Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale for Friday night’s Starlight Musical event. Performing from 7-10 p.m. is the country music group the Andrew Morris Band. Band leader Andrew names the legendary country artist George Jones as one of his biggest influences as well as The Eagles. The show is free.
