This weekend, reminisce with a Coen Brothers film cult classic during a late-night screening or learn how to cook a great burger for Dad on his day.
Spend Friday night watching a dynamic dancer perform and a visual artist display his works of art. On Saturday you can visit the Freedom Tower and catch the current exhibitions while the kids play.
Striking it big with Lebowski
The star-studded Coen Brothers cult classic The Big Lebowski is a hilarious romp of mistaken identity starring Jeff Bridges in the title role as “The Dude,” who gets his bowling buddy, played by John Goodman, to help him pull off an unlikely high-stakes one-time job with major pay-off, all so he can get back his precious ruined rug. Julianne Moore, John Turturro, Steve Buscemi and Philip Seymour Hoffman round out the cast and even Flea, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has a part in the movie. It’s showing free Saturday at 11 p.m. at Actors’ Playhouse.
Go Go to MOA+D for a fun-filled afternoon
Exposing kids to art makes them more culturally well rounded, and on Saturday morning keeps them busy and entertained. The Miami Dade College Museum of Art + Design in the historic Freedom Tower hosts its GO GO MOA+D monthly event Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. While the kids create mixed media sculptures inspired by the art of Florencio Gelabert in the activity “Islands for my Family,” you can tour the artist’s exhibition at the museum and visit the pop-up shop for unique gifts.
Grill dad the perfect burger
Let Dad take a break from the grill Sunday on his special day. Instead, cook him the perfect burger after learning some great tips from a pro chef on Saturday at 2 p.m. during the free cooking demo at Macy’s in Aventura Mall. Executive Chef Jeremiah, best known for the gourmet food truck Gastropod, which is now a free-standing restaurant in Wynwood, demonstrates how to make the best burger from fresh seasonal meat and produce.
Catch the Freak Show at MADE
Choreographer and performer Annabel Gueredrat brings her one-woman show “The Freak Show for S” to the new performance/art space MADE at the Citadel in Little River on Friday at 8 p.m. Gueredrat’s piece tackles the issues of black feminism, gender, post-colonialism and the treatment of 19th century European women. After the show, visit the debut exhibition of artist-in-residence Rontherin Ratliff, who hails from New Orleans. Admission is $10 and includes one complimentary drink.
Belting out tunes with local celebs at the Hard Rock
You’re used to seeing these folks in front of the camera, delivering the news, traffic and weather but on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. they’re hitting the stage with you at the Seminole Hard Rock Café for Singing with the Stars. A fundraiser for Neighbors 4 Neighbors, the event gives you the opportunity to bid to sing a duet with Channel 4’s meteorologist John Gerard, traffic reporter Vanessa Borge, entertainment reporter Lisa Petrillo and weekend anchor Cynthia Demos. Admission to the event is free.
