This is another great weekend to be in South Florida, where winter means not the polar vortex but sunny days with lots of free and cheap things to do outdoors.
Farmers’ markets are open all over Miami-Dade and Broward. You can get your art fix Saturday night at the monthly studio crawl on Lincoln Road and hear some old-time (and maybe newfangled, too) music Sunday afternoon at the monthly South Florida Bluegrass Association’s free bluegrass festival and acoustic jam.
Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun Jan. 31-Feb. 2.
Purple people and repetitive rodents
Looking for free family-friendly movies? The Miami Beach Department of Parks and Recreation will show “The Smurfs” at 7 p.m. Friday at the North Shore Park Bandshell. At Hollywood ArtsPark, you can see “Groundhog Day” at 8 p.m. Friday.
Free outdoor jazz and indoor art
It’s Jazz at MOCA Friday night, a regular monthly event that includes admission by donation to the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami from 7 to 10 p.m. and a free jazz concert outdoors at 8 p.m. This month’s featured band is the South Florida Jazz Orchestra. Parking is free, too.
Symphony under the Stars
On Saturday night, you can experience the New World Symphony larger than life with the free outdoor Wallcast of the concert on a 7,000-square-foot projection wall at Soundscape on Miami Beach. The concert, at 7:30 p.m., features conductor Michael Tilson Thomas leading the orchestra in works from Tchaikovsky, including the composer’s last completed symphony, “Pathetique.”
Singing and dancing in South Dade
Students and faculty of the Miami Dade College Kendall campus will showcase their singing, dancing and acting talent in a free performance at 7 p.m. Saturday at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. The “Kendall Comes Alive” performance is part of the “On Stage” series of free events put on by the MDC Kendall campus students and faculty.
Free visits to museums in Miami-Dade and Broward
Anyone with a Bank of America or Merrill Lynch credit or debit card can get one free entry Saturday or Sunday to the Perez Art Museum Miami, the Miami Children’s Museum, Miami Science Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art and the Bass Museum of Art. In Broward, the program includes the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Discovery and Science, the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale and the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum. That’s all through the Museums on Us program, which provides free admission to museums nationwide the first weekend of every month. Saturday is the monthly free day for the Gold Coast Railroad Museum. Friday nights are always free at The Wolfsonian, and Saturdays are always free at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU. And, admission is free every day at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU.
