The holidays are over, and it’s time to focus on your New Year’s resolutions. If one of those was to have more fun while spending less money, you’re on the right track.
While the rest of the nation shivers, we’ll be going to outdoor movies, dining outside and otherwise enjoying winter in South Florida. Even better, we’ll be enjoying those opportunities without spending much money.
Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun Jan. 3-5.
Visit museums free all weekend
It’s the first weekend of the month, which means anyone with a Bank of America or Merrill Lynch credit or debit card can get one free entry Saturday or Sunday to the new Perez Art Museum Miami, the Miami Children’s Museum, Miami Science Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art and the Bass Museum of Art. In Broward, the program includes the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Discovery and Science, the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale and the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum. That’s all through the Museums on Us program. Saturday is the monthly free day for the Gold Coast Railroad Museum. Friday nights are always free at The Wolfsonian, and Saturdays are always free at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU. And, admission is free every day at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU.
Blue, blue, bluegrass
The South Florida Bluegrass Association puts on a free bluegrass festival and acoustic jam the first Sunday of every month from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Greynolds Park. Grab your guitar and join in, or come just to listen. Admission is free, but parking is $6 per car. Food and drink are available for purchase but you need to bring your own chairs or blankets.
Art and al fresco dining
Gables Gallery Night is the first Friday of every month, and Giralda Under the Stars brings entertainment and outdoor dining to Giralda Street between Ponce and Galiano, for your pre- or post-art pleasure. On Saturday night, you can see more art at the ArtCenter South Florida Studio Crawl on Lincoln Road.
Music at the mall
Dolphin Mall presents live music by local bands at the Ramblas Plaza stage from 8 p.m. to midnight every Friday and Saturday and 4 to 8 p.m. every Sunday. Think cheap entertainment before or after dinner. This weekend’s performers are Brazilian Explosion on Friday, La Tradicion on Saturday and Bryan Gonzalez on Sunday.
Free kids’ movie outdoors
Want to enjoy a free outdoor movie with the kids? You’ve got four options this weekend. The Miami Beach Department of Parks and Recreation will show “Space Jam” at 7 p.m. Friday at the North Shore Park Bandshell. The city of Sunny Isles Beach is showing “Despicable Me 2” at 7 p.m. Friday at Heritage Park and 7 p.m. Saturday at Town Center Park. At Hollywood ArtsPark, you can see “Monsters University” at 8 p.m. Friday.
