Free and cheap things to do in Miami – Jan. 2-4

Take advantage this weekend and squeeze every last drop of fun out of the holidays before the humdrum of normal life starts again Monday. Coral Gables is always a good spot to spend the first Friday of the month, enjoying Giralda Under the Stars and Gables Gallery Night. Or perhaps you prefer to head south to the South Miami Dade-Cultural Arts Center for its Black Creek Nights concert.

You can also opt to get a jump start on the New Year’s fitness resolution with a free boot camp class at one of several Miami-Dade parks. The military veterans teaching the classes will whip you into shape with their no-nonsense approach. And keep your Bank of America card handy; it’s your free ticket into our crown jewel, The Perez Art Museum Miami, as well as the Bass Museum and MOCA in North Miami.

An all-Gables Friday night
Giralda Avenue in Coral Gables is a mecca for foodies. Friday is the perfect opportunity to stroll through and make it a night for food and family fun during Giralda Under the Stars. That’s when the street’s blocked off from 7 p.m. to midnight between Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Galiano, sidewalk café tables come out and live entertainment can be enjoyed on every corner. If the art bug hits you just hop on the trolley and visit a few galleries during Gallery Night from 6-10 p.m.

Black Creek Nights series kicks off with all-girls show
An all-female line-up of performers kicks off the Black Creek Nights Series Friday at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. This event is in the center’s backyard concert lawn and plaza starting at 8 p.m. The international performers include Ana + Maye Osorio from Venezuela, Gigi Ojeda from Puerto Rico and Nina Rodriguez from Colombia, along with several others. Cover charge is $10, but you might be able to get in free with a promo code.

Get pumped and fit at boot camp class
Why sweat indoors in a stuffy gym? Turn to the pros – military veterans — who know what it’s like to train outdoors. They’ll get you in shape at one of the many boot camp classes at parks around Miami-Dade County. Part of the Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness Program, classes take place at six parks from the north to the south end of the county. Classes range from two to three hours, and instructors use the park’s outdoor equipment to create specific circuit training classes. Get pumped in the fresh air and be ready for summer by next month.

Crawl for art or be a fashionista…the choice is yours
Nothing compares to a one-on-one experience with artists during their creative process, and the Art Center South Florida Studio Crawl on Lincoln Road offers that Saturday night from 7-10 p.m. That’s when the artists open up their studios in the evening and work while the public meanders through the building. If fashion is more your style Coconut Grove’s F.A.M. (Fashion Arts Music) night, also on Saturday from 7-10 p.m., might be for you. Held throughout the Grove’s main streets, it offers art and jewelry workshops at the area boutiques along with live music, giving the event a throwback, indie bohemian vibe that’s the true spirit of the neighborhood.

Las Olas Art Fair in Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale’s Las Olas Art Fair is Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Held along the city’s most famous street, it includes more than 150 artists selling works in various mediums. You can commission an artist to create a piece, ask about their techniques and delve into what inspires their work. Las Olas also offers a multitude of eateries to curb any food craving.
