Free and cheap things to do in Miami – Dec. 13-15

The palm trees are festooned with lights, which means it’s almost Christmas in South Florida. One of the joys of the season is free entertainment.

If you didn’t see enough art last weekend during Art Basel, you’ve got another chance this week with the monthly Design District and Wynwood art walks on Saturday night.

It’s also a good weekend for classical music, with three free events on Saturday and one on Sunday. You can enjoy free music with your shopping on Friday night at The Falls and at Southland Mall.

Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun Dec. 13-15.

Street performers in downtown Miami
Miami musicians are putting on a free downtown Buskerfest music festival Friday night, with local bands at all eight of the downtown inner loop Metromover stations. Ride (free) and enjoy the entertainment from 5 to 9 p.m. Then head over to Bayfront Park, where the Spam Allstars will give a free concert at 9 p.m. at the Tina Hills Pavilion.

Free day at the new Perez Art Museum Miami
Everyone’s talking about the new Perez Art Museum Miami, and you’ve got another chance to see it free this weekend. Entry to the museum is free the second Saturday of every month, with special activities from 1 to 4 p.m. This weekend, the museum is celebrating percussion, with a chance to create percussion instruments and listen to drum performances by First Beat, 12 women drummers from Miami and New York City. Kids will also have the opportunity to build model boats. The museum is also free the first Thursday of every month.

‘Tristan and Isolde’ (or part of it) on the big screen

The New World Symphony is doing orchestral selections from Wagner’s “Tristan and Isolde” this weekend, and you have an opportunity to watch it free from the lawn of the New World Center. The Wallcast concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, with the symphony concert projected on a 7,000-square-foot projection wall. The concert features violist Leila Josefowicz and conductor Mark Wigglesworth.

Sounds of the season piano duets and a Winter Solstice concert

Pianists Dionisio Camacho and Kristin Camacho will present a free holiday program of piano duets at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Bakehouse Arts Complex. The event is one of a series of free piano concerts sponsored by the Bakehouse and the Miami Piano Circle. Saturday’s program will include Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, “Sleigh Ride,” “Carol of the Bells” and some Christmas jazz. On Sunday, Music in Miami will present a free Winter Solstice concert featuring the Brubeck Neal Duo and the Miami Dade College Kendall Campus dancers, brass and percussion ensembles, jazz and chamber choirs.
