Free and cheap things to do in Miami – Dec. 11-13

Re-live or discover the mysterious and often bizarre world that is the films of David Lynch during a film series kick-off on Miami Beach on Friday. Friday also is the ideal day to ride Metromover and enjoy the sounds of local performers during Buskerfest at all eight downtown Metromover stations.

Test your skills with the latest Xbox games, perhaps get lucky and win tickets to the Miami Dolphins vs. New York Giants Monday night football game at Sun Life Stadium and catch Elle King in concert on Saturday night in Wynwood.

Spend Sunday afternoon enjoying family activities at the Design District’s newest and coolest outdoor event area Palm Court.

The bizarre world of David Lynch

One of Miami’s newest non-profits, PAXy, is presenting a four-part series of films by director David Lynch and calling it “Catching the Big Fish.” Known for his suspenseful, bizarre and downright strange storytelling, the group is kicking things off with Mulholland Drive. The 2001 film, regarded as a psychological thriller and starring relative then-unknowns Naomi Watts, Laura Harring and Justin Theroux, features a storyline filled with separate vignettes that eventually connect. The film screens Friday at 9 p.m. at art house Miami Beach Cinematheque, 1130 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. Admission is free.

An afternoon of live music on the mover

Even if you’re not a regular Metromover rider, you’ll want to take a few rides throughout downtown Friday afternoon and experience the live music event Buskerfest. That’s when from 4 to 9 p.m. a series of local street performers will take over all eight Metromover stations and perform for the entertainment of Metromover passengers. It’s the organizer’s way of promoting civic engagement in public spaces. There are also some festivities happening at Bayfront Park at 8 p.m. to conclude the buskering. Metromover is free and so is admission to Bayfront Park.

Gamers give your thumbs a workout this weekend

The timing is impeccable for this weekend’s Microsoft Tailgaming Tour in Wynwood that’s capping off with a free concert by singer Elle King of the hit single Ex’s and Oh’s. It takes place at The Hangar event space at 2235 NW 2nd Ave (on 22nd Lane) and gives gamers an opportunity to check out the latest Xbox games just in time for the holidays. Games include Madden 16 and Forza Motorsport 6 as well as the Surface Sideline Viewing System which NFL coaches use. Attendees also have a chance to win tickets to the Miami Dolphins vs. New York Giants game at Sun Life Stadium as well as autographed sports memorabilia. It goes from 2 to 10 p.m. Friday and 2 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday with the concert at 9 p.m. Admission is free.

Get creative with the family Sunday in Design District

Mainly known for great restaurants, high-end shopping with more and more expansion of stores moving to the area, the Design District is now also ideal for families during the Sunday Family Day at Palm Court. Held at one of the newest event venues, the two hour event from 1 to 3 p.m. includes a gift-making interactive activity for the whole family, performance of holiday music by School of Rock and a chance for kids to partake in a theatrical presentation where they help Santa find his cheer. The venue is located at 140 NE 39th St. and admission is free.

Festival holiday lights on the water

South Florida is all about being on the water so holiday boat parades are a big thing for us and there’s one on Sunday, the Greater Pompano Beach Holiday Boat Parade, starting at 6 p.m. Boat owners parade their festively decorated vessels through the Intracoastal Waterway on Lake Santa Barbara to the Hillsboro Inlet bridge in Deerfield Beach. Good viewing spots in Pompano are along Harbor’s Edge Park at 1240 NE 28th Ave. and Alsdorf Park at 2974 NE 14th St.
