Those dreaded words “back to school” are creeping up everywhere, but that also means tax-free shopping this weekend. This weekend also kicks off the Ladies Leading Film series at the Wolfsonian-FIU, where it’s all about girl power.
Practice your form and make it a strike-filled (you hope) visit to the bowling alley on National Bowling Day on Saturday. Culture aficionados can check out art twice this weekend, via trolley in downtown Coral Gables on Friday night or on foot with the hipsters of Wynwood on Saturday night.
Perez Art Museum Miami is free on Saturday and so is HistoryMiami during their family days. Friday nights are always free at The Wolfsonian-FIU.
Tax-free weekend means time to stock up
Kids always want new backpacks for the incoming school year, and they always need shoes. Starting Thursday, get ready to stock up on everything from school supplies, purses, apparel, computers and assorted accessories because they’re all tax-free through Aug. 16. Be aware that school supplies have to be $15 or less per item and clothes and accessories $100 or less per item. Surf the office supply or big box store sites or read the newspaper ads to get the best deals and maximize your savings.
Girl power celebrated on film
The Wolfsonian-FIU is taking a look at powerful leading ladies in film with the Ladies Leading film series kicking off on Friday and running through the month with a new film each Friday. In the first film, Rosalind Russell plays an ace reporter who battles in the newsroom with her editor and ex-husband, played by Cary Grant, in the 1940 hit His Girl Friday. The screening is at 7 p.m. and admission is free. Get there early and take a look around the museum first.
Bowling’s gratis for National Bowling Day
Strike it big, and we mean that literally, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon and then again at night starting at 8 p.m. for National Bowling Day. You’ll have to pay for the spiffy bowling shoe rental but participants get a free game before noon. Then come back at 8 p.m., if you’re 21 or older, for contests, prizes and drink specials. Participating lanes in South Florida are Strike Miami, AMF Pembroke Pines Lanes, AMF Davie Lanes and Brunswick Margate Lanes. Call your favorite center to find out exactly what’s planned.
On foot or by trolley, the choice is yours
You can get your art fix either Friday during Gables Gallery Night or Saturday during the Wynwood Art Walk. Friday from 6-10 p.m. you can board the trolley around downtown Coral Gables and hop on and off, visiting a variety of galleries and enjoying the art and wine. On Saturday the scene is edgier during the Wynwood Art Walk, where from 7-10 p.m. you pound the pavement and see art happening all around you, with spontaneous street performers and artists as well as works within gallery walls. The choice is yours.
Party by moonlight in Margate
Free beer for those 21 and over on a Saturday night can’t be beat. Add to that more than 15 food trucks selling everything from Latin to Caribbean fare, local artists and artisans showcasing their unique handmade items and live music by Chloe Dolandis, and you’ve got a party. That’s the scene at the Margate Under the Moon Party from 5-10 p.m. at the northwest corner of Margate Boulevard and U.S. 441. All ages are welcome, admission is free and the event is pet-friendly. What more could you ask for?
