Free and cheap things to do in Miami – Aug. 21-23

Little Haiti will be groovin’ and movin’ Friday night during the monthly Big Night in Little Haiti with musical performances and an after-party. On Saturday, you can parade with, dress up and show off your pooch’s talents during the CocoWalk DogFest.

Fashionistas and movie lovers will want to make their way to Bal Harbour Shops for the Fashion Project Film Series, featuring iconic fashions in movies from 1929 to 1994 showing all weekend (and beyond). Friday night, try a free museum experience at either the Wolfsonian-FIU on Miami Beach or the Miami Children’s Museum on Watson Island.

Celebrate the Haitian experience

Big Night in Little Haiti, the monthly celebration, is Friday from 6-10 p.m. at the Little Haiti Cultural Center. The young Haitian group Rara Rock opens for the group PNP Plezi’n Nap Pran, which plays Haiti’s classic Konpa Direk. In the gallery, there will be a contemporary photo exhibition by Iris Photo Collective. You can snap a selfie in the Beck’s Urban Canvas Lounge to capture a memory of the evening, then stick around after 10 for the after party. Admission is free. http://miamionthecheap.com/big-night-in-little-haiti-concert-and-art-series-free-third-fridays/

CocoWalk’s going to the dogs

Dog lovers take over Coconut Grove on Saturday at CocoWalk’s DogFest from 2-6 p.m. The festivities will include a dog and owner look-alike contest, Paw Walk, a dog costume contest and a My Dog’s Got Talent Contest. If your dog needs a companion, Miami-Dade County Animal Services will host pet adoptions, and Lokal Burger will hand out dog treats. Live entertainment and concessions for hungry dog owners round out the festivities. Admission is free. http://miamionthecheap.com/free-cocowalk-dog-fest/

Fashion-forward screen icons

Fashion and film go together like flip-flops and the beach, and the folks at the Fashion Project in Bal Harbour are showcasing iconic fashion images captured on film during a film series that continues this weekend. The films are hosted by Nat Chediak, founder of the Miami International Film Festival and currently director of programming at Coral Gables Art Cinema. Friday and Saturday at 2:30 and 7 p.m., catch the elegant Ginger Rogers and debonair Fred Astaire in Top Hat. On Sunday at 3 p.m. fashion trendsetters Joan Crawford, Joan Fontaine and Rosalind Russell light up the screen in The Women. All films are free. http://miamionthecheap.com/free-films-on-fashion-at-books-books-in-bal-harbour/
