Free and cheap events in Miami this weekend – Dec. 2-4

From Art Basel to holiday and live music events, this weekend is sure to keep one busy but we’ve got the free and the cheap so you won’t have to break the bank. Enjoy.

Art Basel

Is Art Basel too pricey for you? Fear not, Miami On The Cheap has listed a bunch of free events surrounding Art Basel and wait till you see ‘em. I’m intrigued with the Saturday traffic jam symphony event that invites everyone to come out and honk their horns — as if Miamians needed an invitation to do so — and the skateboarders playing ukuleles in the Miami-Dade College parking lot. Anyway, I’m sure there’s something on the free list that will catch your eye as it did mine.

Holiday events

In case you live under a rock, the holiday season has sprung upon us and that means Miami On The Cheap has begun the annual holiday roundup of free and cheap events. The malls, of course, are front and center on this right now because they’ve planned the entire month of December with all sorts of Santa events to lure you into their stores. Dolphin Mall has a new entertainment called Santa’s Flight Academy, which is an interactive journey on the way to get a Santa photo that includes a light show from inside a sleigh, and runs all month. On Saturday, bring a toy donation to the free CocoWalk tree lighting ceremony and see CocoVillage, a holiday village created by schoolchildren.

Music

Miami usually excites when it comes to live music performances and this weekend there is quite a variety as everyone is trying to outdo each other in front of the Art Basel guests:

  •  Hear Electric Kif play cosmic funk, rock, soul, and jazz in Miami Beach for free on Dec. 2.
  • Songfest kicks off its first free concert in Miami with classical singing from young artists of the Florida Grand Opera on Dec. 2 in Coral Gables
  • Nag Champayons will celebrate the release of a new video called “Brazilian LSD” with a free screening and performance in Wynwood on Dec. 2.
