DWNTWN Art Days kicks off this year’s arts season with more than 60 exhibitions and events at cultural spaces in downtown Miami. The three-day festival is Friday, Sept. 11 through Sunday, Sept 13 at various venues throughout the community.
The Miami Center for Architecture and Design’s historic Beaux Arts-style building is the Art Days Hub, playing host to creative activities such as designing your own Art Days t-shirt, discovering Miami’s art through historic film/video and artist-led tours by Fringe Projects. Art Days staff will be at The Hub to help guests with itineraries and directions for finding the festival’s myriad locations. The Art Days app, which launched last year, was upgraded to provide better on-the-go navigation and personalized settings. Admission to most Art Days venues will be waived when the app is shown at the entrance.
Downtown Miami, according to the Miami Downtown Development Authority, has the highest concentration of cultural institutions in the Southeast.
“Downtown today stands at the center of arts and culture in our community, and Art Days is a great opportunity to experience the growing arts scene unfolding in our urban core,” said Miami DDA executive director Alyce Robertson. “The event was created to educate, engage and bring people together through a shared love of art and with programming across all art forms. There’s something for everyone.”
“Listen To This Building,” a collaborative project between Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, Exile Books, and Miami Center for Architecture and Design, presents a rare immersive exhibition designed to address accessibility for people with visual impairments. The creators believe it’s the first architectural project of its kind.
The team transformed iconic downtown Miami buildings into a living, multimedia tableau with the exterior of MCAD spotlighting the exhibit’s central component, a public art installation featuring audio recordings in which community members share captivating stories about the historic structures in the neighborhood. Exile Editions published a Braille artist’s book with these local narratives alongside tactile reliefs to commemorate the special exhibition.
This Saturday, orientation and mobility tours will be open to the public, courtesy of Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
