Bal Harbour Shops knows it’s hip to be square — Dsquared2, that is. Hot on the heels of store openings in New York and Los Angeles, the edgy Italian-based label with Canadian roots recently opened its third American store in the tony mall. The brainchild of identical twin designers Dean and Dan Caten (thus the label’s cheeky moniker), we chat up Co-Owner Dean on the rough-and-tumble fashion macrocosm, Miami and more.
Congratulations on your third U.S. door. Why was Miami your next choice in location? We adore Miami and we visit often to holiday and are inspired by the city and its people. That’s why opening our Dsquared2 store in Bal Harbour is such an important moment for us and our brand. To be able open a flagship in such an important luxury destination has been a long-held dream of ours.
Describe your affinity for the Magic City: Miami is an amazing mix of fun, relax, arts and design. You can really do everything over there. This city never gets boring!
The brand just celebrated 20 years — a huge feat in the fickle fashion world. To which characteristics do you attribute Dsquared2’s success? These past 20 years have been an amazing adventure. We had a dream to create Dsquared2 and we never let it go. We were determined, a bit crazy, but so passionate. Our success definitely stems from those things.
If you weren’t what would be Plan B? Definitely something related to arts. But to be honest, we can’t imagine any other job.
Nobody knows this about you but… When we were children, we use to pretend to be one and other.
