Boutique of the week: Playne Jayne

Shuttling between office meetings, book club with the girls and outings with the beaux means your perfectly pressed pencil skirt looks like it’s been through a sharpener by the day’s end. No wonder your mean-girl friends have started calling you Wrinkled Wendy. For an ensemble that lasts longer than your Lady Speedstick, head to North Miami where Playne Jane owner and designer Martha Hernandez has mastered the art of hectic-haute.

“My clothes are for the modern woman on the go. Women with an active lifestyle who want to look put together without feeling constricted,” says Hernandez, of her one-of-a-kind designs. She makes all of her clothing in-house from a variety of stretch fabrics. From colorful designs to paisley prints, Hernandez’s creations encompass an assortment of styles. “The fabric is always telling me what to do,” she says, of her main inspiration.

And recessionista’s won’t have a problem finding pieces to mix and match because Hernandez makes sure her designs are practically stretched thin. “I make pants, tops and dresses from one material so you can coordinate all of the different pieces.”

Just in time for Spring, Hernandez has been busy designing colorful rompers and maxi-dresses, her biggest seller she says. Both priced between $60 an $80. The boutique’s singular stash is replenished approximately every two weeks, or about as quickly as Hernandez can churn it out.

Located in burgeoning downtown North Miami, the tiny store is slightly off the beaten path – all part of Hernandez’s plan. “I researched the area before opening the boutique four years ago and realized the whole neighborhood was going through a renaissance,” she says.

Take a cue and give your Sally Stiff wardrobe a rebirth of its own.
