Quirky, cute, sexy and cool, alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet is the much-adored label with a huge Hollywood following. Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, J. Lo, Blake Lively, Taylor Swift and Sarah Jessica Parker can be spotted in 31-year-old Bendet’s playful creations.
“It’s everything you would want in your closet — flirty and fun. I design clothes to make a woman feel pretty — it’s a mood!” Bendet says of her line. Launched in 2002, Bendet’s love of culture, music, art and vintage fashion are infused into each collection. We rubbed elbows with the eccentric designer and here’s what she had to say.
You grew up in New York City. Describe your childhood: Oddly normal. Normal is odd these days, though.
What jobs did you have before spearheading your line? I designed and built websites after college.
You’re known in fashion circles as “StaceyPants.” Why is that? I started designing pants and I love wearing bold and crazy pants. My friend Dani Stahl from nylon made up the nickname. She always introduced me as Stacey With The Pants.
Your pants are what placed you on the fashion map! You were on the search for the perfect pair and made your own. Dish. Lisa Kline placed an order with me while I was climbing into a taxi on Robertson Boulevard! Barneys and Scoop were the first to carry the entire line.
Why is alice + olivia perfect for Miami girls? It’s sexy and fun!
What do you love most about Miami? The humidity. It’s awesome. Big hair rocks.
What word comes to mind when thinking of Miami? Party.
A slew of celebrities wear your creations. Who would you love to see next in alice + olivia from head to toe? A Blythe Doll.
How did you conjure up the a+o summer tour? It was one of those projects that started off as, “Hey, let’s do cross country trunk shows and parties with all the cool boutiques we have worked with since we started to this rather massive undertaking of fun and do-gooding. The Airstream idea was borrowed from the show my father-in-law created about a dentist who moves his family into a mobile home called Glenn Martin, DDS.
Rumor has it you are high energy. Do you really wake up at 4:30 a.m. to practice ashtanga for an hour? Yup. Although some days I sleep till 5 or 5:30, but I practice five days a week.
You have a daughter named Eloise (after the children’s book character who grew up in the Plaza Hotel). How do you manage mommy-hood and your budding empire? It’s learning to balance. I’m lucky to have amazing help and a supportive husband too!
It’s your day off. What are you doing? Yoga and vintage shopping but I don’t have much time for hobbies these days!
What’s next on your agenda? A Minx Nails manicure. Mine are chipping terribly.
